I have been playing around with flying online. I guess I make a pretty good target . Sometimes the lag is pretty bad and I was wondering if I change the resolution would it get any better, if I increase my RAM would it get any better... Could that help or is it just my connection speed that I need to work on? Thanks... weaselIP: Logged |

It depends. First, tap Alt-P to turn on the frame rate display in the lower left. If you're dropping below 20 fps regularly then you'll want to cut back on graphic details to boost that back up. If you're consistently above 20 fps then your problem is most likely your connection. Are you using a WinModem? Those are notorious for causing lag in high performance games. IP: Logged |

High Velocity K56/flex Dura Flex V-90 with telephony and faxmodem. AOL is my server. I think I need an upgrade of some kind. Memory is cheap right now and it could'nt hurt. Thanks... weaselIP: Logged |

I looked a little, but couldn't find that modem. You might go here and follow the instructions to learn more about your modem. http://www.56k.com/trouble/noname.shtml I'm guessing that if you didn't specify then you probably got a WinModem. A WinModem uses the CPU to handle a lot of the work, leaving a lot fewer cycles for the game. WinModems are inexpensive and work great for surfing the net. But they're a poor choice for playing games over the Internet. Also, AOL is reknowned for being laggy. Almost any other ISP would likely be better. If you want to continue using AOL for email, etc, you can do that even though you're using a different ISP to access the net. If you tell them you're doing that then they'll cut your fee to $9.95/month. So it may even cost you less than you're paying now. IP: Logged |

Exaclty what Mighty said, I used to use AOL, now I'm on the bring your own provider service so I have an ISP instead of AOL (now I have it for mail only, thats all it's good for), AOL is a MASSIVE drain on your net resources, it hogs them for itself killing your bandwidth. If you must use AOL to connect, see if you can get hold of AOL2.5 or 3 instead of 4,5 or 6, AOL3 doesn't suck the life out of the internet like the other versions do.~Nat~ IP: Logged |

weasel, Don't be so hard on yourself. I enjoyed flying with you last nite online--but it was really laggy making it hard to tell if either one of us was flying well anyway. I started out using AOL and had the same lag problems a while back and since switching ISP's have had much better luck. Winmodems are not known for their gaming performance as MH said. Don't give up as SDOE online is worth working with to get it working well. A little hardware and software tweaking and lots and lots and lots of flying practice make for some really good times later on down the road. I've been playing this game since the beginning almost two years ago and I also fly for a living and have been doing that for over 20 years and I still get my butt shot out of the sky many times. Its just too much fun to worry about how good I am at this. There's always somebody better out there--so just enjoy the experience of flying a WWII (or WWI) fighter. Hope to see you in the virtual skies again soon! AQIP: Logged |

Thanks for the replies. I think that AOL might be the problem. I'll still try other options. Online play is fun. See you in the skies... weaselIP: Logged |
