Topic: Cloud Flickering w/ GeForce cards?

Can't figure this one out after much troubleshooting and I'm hoping maybe someone found a fix for this...Here's the problem: Clouds, target boxes, plane's shadow and smoke all flicker (in unison I believe) in multiplayer games _only_. I can replicate the problem by playing offline in tcp/lan mode. I had heard about others having cloud trouble in online games, but the first night I had the new card I didn't recognize the problem w/ the card in the old system (AMD k6-2 350). On the new system (AMD 1g t-bird) it's more pronounced (faster system, thus more eye catching ) I've tried directx7a (which worked w/ my original tnt card) and directx8. I've tried 3 different Nvidia ref. drivers and played around w/ driver settings, but the fact that it happens in multiplayer alone makes me think that there's not much I can do about it anyway (can't fix one thing without breaking another). Maybe there's a game setting I'm missing... Any ideas or suggestions on this welcome. TIA, Gus IP: Logged |

I think there is something changed in more recent (the last 6 months!) drivers for Nvidia cards. My first card was a TNT1 16Mb and the early drivers didn't make the clouds flicker. Then as the drivers got faster they did. My current GeForce2 flickers also. It flickers in an offline LAN game also.Try the oldest drivers that will work with your card, perhaps. Not much help ------------------ 9./JG3_Jetlag IP: Logged |

I used to have flickering clouds but not anymore, I think the nvidia 6.1 ref drivers fixed it. Only problem I have now is flickering Id's on planes and triangular stepping on the coastline around dover. The drivers are fast though and I only have these artifacts in Sdoe.

Howdy Spyd!Good to hear from you! How've you been? Haven't seen you in a while. Last I heard, you were flying CFS2... Anyway, do you remember if your flickering was in MP only? Also, I've always had a jagged coastline (even w/ the original tnt through many, many driver changes). As long as the host doesn't turn the clouds option on, it's playable. I'll try to hunt down the 6.1 ref driver you mention and see if it makes any difference. Thanks all and hope to catch you online soon, Gus IP: Logged |

You've got me there Gus, I rarely flew this sim offline so I can't say for sure if it was offline as well as online. I'll check the blinking plane Id's though, I think they were online only. Flying Cfs2 online is pretty much a dull affair, simply fantastic offline though. With Bob out in a week or so I don't know if I'll be around for a bit yet unless it doesn't work online either. Seen or heard from Zoy? We've been trying to find the guy.

Yep, the blinking ID's are online only so I suspect the flickering clouds were too. Don't know why my clouds are ok online now, maybe Dx7.1 in Win ME or just the 6.31 drivers.

Hey Guys.. A friend of mine is running with a Duron 600 and Geforce2 MX card. I loaded FS onto his system and it runs beuatifully in offline mode. As soon as we got into multiplayer online anything in the sky, clouds, ID tags, smoke trails etc flashed on and off violently. Drivers loaded for the MX was 6.31. Even with upgrading to 6.34 we got the same effect but offline was brilliant! I am running a Tnt2 m64 on my Cel 566 (O/C to 845mhz). When I upgraded my original driver to the 6.34 I too experienced the exact same probs online but again NOT offline. I reinstalled the old drivers and I'm happy again . Is there a better driver version available for both Tnt2 and Geforce2 MX cards? Cheers Karaya 2 =FC= ------------------ IP: Logged |

Which Dx version are you using Kar? I'm beginning to think it's Dx rather than the drivers that fixed mine.

I'm fairly certain that this isn't a directx problem. I say fairly, because I had originally installed dx8, had to uninstall it using a common utility (thanks MS), and install dx7a. The uninstaller isn't perfect, but does remove the important things. Everything else installed on the system ran as usual after reverting to the previous dx version.I used the same driver version (numbers not available at the moment) that worked on my old system. Also, I ran into the problem on the old system while changing nothing more than the video card. I didn't even have to change ref version (there's a few drivers in each release). So, I believe from what I read here that there may be a particular driver that helps this; however, I'd still like to know what is different about single and multiplayer games that causes this. Besides, the cause may present a solution... IP: Logged |

Is anyone using TNT2 card that does not see online cloud flicker? If so please give us your driver version and for the heck of it your DX version. Maybe we can sort this out if we know what does work. It is obviously NIVIDIA problem. Thanks to anyone that can help. ------------------ Archer ^I^ IP: Logged |

Spyder. When are we going to see you in the FS lobby again? At the time I posted I was still using Dx6!!! However I have since upgraded to Dx8 and with the original drivers for my TNT2 m64 that came with it, ver 4.11.01.0208, all is fine online. Am now wondering though, with having Dx8 should I upgrade my drivers to 6.31 or 6.34 now to gain any extra benefits or should I leave well enuf alone? Does the 'if it aint broke don't fix it' rule come into play now? Karaya 2 =FC= ------------------ IP: Logged |

Kar, your mileage may vary but I have much more fps in games using the 6.31 drivers than I did with my card's latest drivers. As you say though, if it ain't broke....------------------ IP: Logged |
