Having made my first foray onto the SDOE network to fly online, when doing a fix up on my hard drive afterwards, and attempting to format the c drive ,I got a message saying 'cannot format a networked drive' .....how do I remove this obstacle...... it has only happened since logging onto the sdoe network option.

First, this is not related to SDOE. The fact that you flew online is coincidence.

Format drive C? Was that a typo?

When I format my boot drive I usually boot from a floppy into MS-DOS mode. That way I don't have to worry about Format wiping out a file that Windows is currently using. In MS-DOS mode, Windows isn't using anything.

I've seen this error message before. If I remember rightly, it's caused by Explorer. The sequence of events is like this:

- You highlight the drive you want to format in Explorer
- You right-click and choose format
- Format churns for awhile and then gives one of a few messages indicating that it doesn't want to format the drive

Since you have the drive highlighted and visible in the right-hand pane of Explorer, Format thinks the drive is in use.

What you have to do is:

- Highlight some other drive, any drive, like a floppy or a CD-ROM
- Right-click (Not left-click) on the drive you want to format

That way, Explorer is out of the way and Format will agree to do its stuff

No , it wasn't a typo :-) I wanted to re-format the hard drive, and received the message 'cannot format a networked drive' I've never had this notice before, a re-format is a straightforward process, and I'd like to find out how to get round this obstacle :-)
