Okay, this is what I would try first...

1. Change your card type to a "Standard PCI Graphics Adapter" from the Display Properties control panel (don't reboot yet!).

2. Delete the file in Windows/Inf/Other/{yourcardmake}.inf that matches your make of video card (after saving it somewhere just in case!) - NVIDIANVAGP.INF on my system.

3. Reboot

4. Click cancel when Windows reboots and detects a new card - don't search for a driver yet.

5. Once back in Windows uninstall the old drivers using Add/Remove control application.

6. Make sure you have a fresh set of drivers unzipped on your hard drive ready to install in a know location.

7. Reboot

8. When Windows detects your "new" card point it in the direction of your unzipped drivers *.inf file and install the drivers.

9. Reboot.

10. Hopefully that should make for a clean video driver install.

11. Re-install DirectX with the latest released version (7.0a) - this can solve a lot of problems sometimes.

I suspect there might be old driver files around that may be causing problems.
