Just recently I've noticed that my frame rates have ground to a halt only with certain planes. My machine isnt the prob...plenty of juice (P3500,128ram voodoo3). I read a while back someone had the same thing or a fix for it.(Sv)?
Can someone shed some light on this?

Well,I tried just 3 planes in Africa. Not a prob until I get within shooting distance and thats when the F/R go WAY down. I at first thought it was because of my "fake" planes but, I tried a variety of original/fake combos...same thing. I tried just other user created planes...again same thing. It wasnt until I tried just a simple 2vs2 P38 mission that seemed to run fine. Getting out of a cockpit view seems to "break" the slow down. Not all user created planes do this. Even if "everything" is turned off and texture is on low I get this.

I also noticed that sometimes when in padlock and the view sweeps over an airfield, the fps drops from 60ish to 3ish.

Doesn't happen when I look at the airfield in fixed view (I think). I noticed it mainly online, but can't be sure it its exclusive to online. I think that maybe more that I am chasing aircraft over fields more often online than off.

Well, forget about the original planes working fine. I was just in a Typhoon that has never been touched and I zoomed out and I went from about 60 to 2 fps! This was flying straight and level with noone else around. I'm going to try a new install later...head hurts.

ahhh.

You're in padlock mode from within the cockpit, perhaps?

There is a problem related to padlock and the terrain that was fixed in a beta some time ago. Essentially, there is a limit on the number of textures which are available to terrain tiles. When the view is zoomed out, you are more likely to reach this limit and thrashing begins. If you stay zoomed in a bit more, you should hopefully be able to avoid this problem

Interesting...

BTW, the old frame rate issue I had with my SE5a had to do with alpha textures. It seems that viewing so many alpha textures behind other alpha textures can cause a frame rate hit... but not all the time. I am still not sure exactly what did it on the SE5a. The slow down was only when looking foward in the cockpit - there were alpha textures for the wind screen, gun cooling holes, and prop. I removed the alpha on the gun and replaced it with a normal texture - this fixed the frame rate issue. It used to fall from like 50 down to 10 for me. Now I get about 30. The key was the fact that zooming in hurt the frame rate MORE! That was odd... if I zoomed right into the wind screen near the gun the FPS went to 3 or so!

MH,
Thank you for the explanation. Yes, I am in padlock mode...all the more reason to learn to fly without it.

Sv,
Thats the general tone of the post I remembered. You had the opposite prob, interesting.

Actually, it's not padlock, per se. It's the fact that the auto-zoom opens the viewpoint so wide that a lot of terrain tiles are visible on-screen at one time. Just zoom in a little and you can work around that problem.

Sounds like my problem too. Probably a little worst with a airfield in view because of the extra textures on the airfield.

Anyway, I'm glad I can work around this. Its not too easy to control stuff at 3fps!

SV: Makes sense, just more pixels that need to be alpha blended.
