Probably a stupid idea and a waste of money but...

In the neverending quest for more performance from my PC, I am interested in buying another hard drive, same make, model and capacity as my current one and combining them into a RAID array. I believe I can buy a RAID card and "stripe" the two drives together for superior performance than you'd get from a single drive. Does anyone have any experience of doing this? What sort of RAID card do I need? What kind of performance increase could I expect? Any information appreciated.

Just a gut reaction. But unless you're doing a whole lot of big database work or something else that hits the hard disk for long periods of time, I'd say that a RAID is a poor bang for the buck. 99% of the time you probably wouldn't even notice the difference.
