I asked this on TECK TALK with a lightbulb icon and figured I should have asked my question here using a ? icon, so forgive me if this has been asked before.

I'v noticed that in the latested plane pack 5.3b that there are multiple FW's under the "Germany" section.
ie. FW-190A3, FW-190A4, FW-190A8, FW-190D9

All I've been trying to do is create multiple "ZERO'S" ( great model by Mposis )
Sofar as I can figure you have to pick from one of the five paint schemes for the a6m5.

All I want to do is, not only a a6m5, but also a a6m3 and an a6m2 (as seen in the 1999 Tamaiya scale model catalogue) I want to paint a new skin.

I've figured out that the plane has 4 folders- aircraft,Gui,hangar and training

Changeing the cutaway.bmp under the Gui folder to a new picture is easy, but what other folders and file names do I have to change to use the same zero model, training missions and hanger info as the a6m5. So that I end up with three classes of zeros and not just one!

If I could just get this working I could get into building, animating and painting the
"VAL"

I think that would be cool to have a Zero- like plane with a tail gunner (that is if its not already in production)Let me know if it is!
But first things first!

Could someone give me some explicit answers
or even show me to some tutorials on plane building/animating/painting!

THANKS.

To create a "new" plane in the sim, you have to have a folder in the Media/aircraft directory. Call it, say, A6M3. Then, copy all the files and folders from the A6M5 folder into the A6M3 folder. Then edit the loadout.ppf file in the A6M3 folder, so that the name of the plane is A6M3. Change the name of the .sm file in the A6M3 folder from A6M5.sm to A6M3.sm. Then, if you want a new picture and description, you have to edit the loadout.ppf again where it describes the location for the A6M5 stats.bmp and cutaway.bmp files files, and actually create those files in the Gui folder stream (just look at the files described in the A6M5's loadout.ppf file to see this.

Then, go to the Media/hangar folder, make a copy of the A6M5.mis hangar mission, and rename it A6M3.mis. Open that file in the mission editor, and change the airplane to the A6M3.

Now, you should see A6M3 as an option in your start screens. At this point it will simply be the A6M5. If you replace the skin .tifs in the A6M3/textures folder with the ones you want for the A6M3, the plane will now look different from the A6M5.

That puts a "new" plane into the game, but "internally," the two files, A6M3.sm and A6M5.sm, are identical. So if you tried to create a mission with BOTH planes in it, you'll only see one type. To actually make the A6M3 "unique," you would need to use OPS or Builder/extractor, and actually rename all the file references and parts from A6M5 to A6M3. To actually model, say, the squared wings of the A6M3, you'd need to use a 3D editor to modify the wing shape, and then OPS to import the new wings.
