I made passing reference to this problem in the General section, but as usual, I buried my problem in th middle of a letter in an inappropriate thread ...

1. I fly what I think is called the Typhoon Attack (which I think came with the game) from an airfield in Dover to Abbeville, the plan being to fly low level with my Flight Leader, with P38 escort; rocket the Abbeville Drove and skidaddle out of there as fast as possible.

Well, I fly over following the leader to the field, and then all the leader does is just fly relatively fast circuits around the Abbeville field, never strafing or attacking for at least 3 circuits.

My time is precious, and, pretty though the scenery is, I take it upon myself to attack the field: rockets and cannon ... lots of fun. But I never see the AI pilots attack the drome. This is frustrating.

Even more silly is that then about 3 or 4 Fw 190's decide to land at the drome, really very close to me, and they neatly line up, wheels and flaps down, and they let me just pick them off one or two at a time while they calmly set about landing. Surely they would have been better off shooting at me, by then a lone raider, because I don't see much of the rest of my flight by then.

All a little odd.

This happens even if I let the AI fly my plane the whole mission (thinking that my leader might be pissed off I was so close on his tail and I might be blasted by his rocket explosions ... thoughtful sort of chap).

2. Also, other missions, my little boy flying a Spitfire against Fw190's, they just give up and land in the middle of open fields! or worse, they land wheels up in open fields ... what is going on?

2. Next problem:

I want to practise some one-on-one fighting and open one of the practice missions and change the bullets from "blanks" to "real - medium destruction I think". In the P38 vs Fw190 mission. Fly away and I get the Fw 190 each time ... and no, this is just getting used to the game, I am NOT a skilled player of this game or a great player of any Flight sim ... in fact I am really quite bad. But the Enemy never seems to attack me!

So, I alter the enemy attributes to highest level of all parameters, except sanity, which I put as lowest so that he should go after me forever ... still he rarely gets position advantage and nearly never puts in a shot ...

I am using PP5.3b on a Pentium 200MMX with VoodooII card, with an otherwise new install of the game.

Is there a solution to this? Or should I just play on line?

Any thoughts would be appreciated as I don't want to invest time learning this sim and its planes well if the AI just won't fight.

Regards,
Mark W

Have you tried the Scramble missions for dogfight practice? The EA definitely shoots at you in these.

Well, will try the Scramble Missions, and thanks:

But that still doesn't explain the strange behaviour in the standard Typhoon mission as I described.

Any other thoughts??

Fuel load may be a reason for the A/C landing too soon.

On the landing, once the AI gets into the landing state it never leaves. So, yes, once they're in the pattern you can shoot them with impunity.
