Just downloaded Chameleon and realized skins can be a pain to deal with.
#1. Is there a compiled list of all aircraft skin names so they're named properly to be applied in the game (i.e. p51d, lanc,). I can't get a spit or p38 skin to be applied (this is true before I had chameleon as well as with it). Chameleon has a pretty good help file, but it didn't get me to where I could use all the skins I have. Does it overwrite any default skin that may have come with an aircraft (the contest ones)? My I16 skin is no longer the original no matter what I do.
What is the skin name for all the planes?

It might be easier to ask for the ones you need. There are 42+ planes out there some with multiple TIFF files. The "original" Spit is Spit11 and the P38j is P38jNewCopy.

Once you place a new skin in the texture file the original skin is lost. The skin in the texture file overides the one in the Parfile. Now, since the I-16 didnt come in a Parfile that skin is overidden by the one placed in the texture file. I always save the original skin in a zip file just to be sure.

The help file also lists what the skin names are for the supported planes in Chameleon.

To revert back to original retail skins, remove the skin in your aircraft/textures folder.

To preserve the contest plane skins, copy them to one of the unused theatre folders before using chameleon, then you can switch to the original designer skins at will.
cheers

Thanks for the info guys. Still having one problem though. Can't seem to get new skin applied to the P-38j. Calling it p38jnewcopy, but it doesn't work. Any other possibilities? I have 5.3 with patch and 1.5 patch (if that could have anything to do with the problem.

Getting the skin to work via Chameleon or manually?
The correct path and name for it is:
Media\aircraft\p38j\textures\p38jnewcopy.tif

I was having same problem trying to see the p
38jmod. I was using the download Ultimate p38
from Paintaholics. I created a folder p38jmod/textures and still the only p38 I got was the default. I gave up and decided to install a skin from FS Hanger. They have one called p38jmod. I noticed it had a loadout file and a sm file. It also had the paths from C/. Now I have the p38jmod in the game and also the tif.s from the UltimateP38
at Paintaholics will work in this folder.
Dog Gone if it does't feel good to finally figure something out.
Thank You to all the work everyone has done for this game.
