I have not really noticed any increase with 5.3b over any CTD's I was having even with 5.2; it does seem that over the past couple of months the problem has gotten worse, but for me it started even before 5.3.

The only problems I've had were with the startup.ppf file and one of the new planes - I believe it was the Hurri, but not positive. I do know that for some reason, I cannot use the startup that came with 5.3b; for me, it causes game lockups requiring a ctl-alt-del to reboot. Going back to my original startup stopped the crashes. I compared the 2 files and the only difference I found were that the CLARK reference in the newer file was at the end of the file; in my original, it was in the first third of it......and there was a reference in the newer file to a WWI50 file that I don't have at all in the older file.

This probably has nothing to do with your problem, but it might be something to look into. Spyder's new property file manager may be of some help there. Sorry if this doesn't help you..
