I'm having a couple of problems with the prop on my Nieuport 17.

They occured after tweaking the following factors to achieve Climb rate and cruise speed:

Factor.........Was.........Now
------.........------......----
airArea........119.951.....1000
propMaxPit.....65..........22

The above setting yield the historically correct climb rate and cruise speeds.

However, now I am observing the following problems:
1) If I increase throttle to where the fastprop lod kicks in and then reduce the throttle to idle, the aircraft begins to accelerate to over 200mph and then the prop dissappears the engine dies and its crash time. (Note: If I just increase the throttle to 100% and leave it there the aircraft reaches the correct target top speed of 104mph with no problems.) The problem only occurs when throttle is cut back to idle.

2) If I'm flying along and kill the engine the engine dies and the prop dissappears. The engine can not be restarted.

Can anyone make some suggestions for adjustments to fix this problem?

Thanks! Ronin

Ronin, You propRaidus (or are you using airArea?) looks ok at 1000, but I think the propMaxPitch is too low for the game. Maybe try setting it to 45 or 50.

You might check with Sv, he was trying some things with a fixed prop pitch. I know he tested several values in here.

Raider:

Yes, I'm setting the airArea to 1000 to increase drag.

I'll try backing off the propMaxPit a few notches and test until I find a point where the problem goes away. Then I'll have to find another way to achieve the climb rate curve I need.

Ronin,

I do think that we will need proper WWI airfoils to get the FM correct.

Check out Pang's new Albatros Dva FM, he did allot of work with the prop, etc. Airfoils are still in the works... have you done any airfoil work? Airfoils apply to the props as well...

I know Pang ran into the same trouble I did, the prop works great, but the engine won't idle! It stalls out unless you give it a little bit of juice

Guys:

Through testing I find that I can't take propMaxPit below a value of 31. If below that value the engine sound turns off but the fast prop doesn't go away nor does the prop stop pulling the ac?!

I don't have any airfoil info at the moment so I'll continue working with the prop, drag, etc. just to get the Nieuport in the ballpark. I can redo the FM when we can shack loose some airfoil data.

Actually Sv, the fact that the engine will not idle could work out great. Many of the WW I planes did not have a throttle. They had to control speed by blipping the engine on and off.

So give it full throttle and adjust speed with blips.

Hey I found what factor was causing the prop to dissappear!

My Nieuport has a two bladed prop. The CoG blocks from the Fokker had four CoG blocks as though expecting a four bladed prop. I had edited the CoG blocks to decrease the size of two of the four blocks to match the layout of a two bladed prop. Apparently... you can't do that! I increased the CoG blocks back to the original four blades and no more problem at the maxPropPit of 22!
