After a long time away I'm back into flight sims and thought I'd try SDOE. I've ordered a K6-2 366 machine. (It was cheap.)Can you recommend a video card? I see that SDOE recommends 3dfx. But the TNT2 cards look better to me. Thanks. IP: Logged |

Punder, what m/board will you have, I use a k6-2 350, but find that the older TNT1 16mg (agp) gives better performance than my Voodoo3 2000 PCI (note though that the PCI modle is in test by 3DFX only very slightly slower than the AGP version)I personaly think that for this game, and to be honest this game alone you'd be better off with the TNT2 than a Voodoo, the voodoo still only has 16mb texture memory, while the TNT2 has 32, and you're really gonna need it with this game. You'll find also that your FP wont be as high as most peoples, but thats purely down to the FPU with the AMD, so don't go thinking that it's the graphics card when it seems low. A 100mhz min bus speed is a must though. You could also overclock your AMD if it is a true 366 (which I doubt) I believe AMD didn't make a 366, I had my 300 overclocked to 366, now it's overclocked at 350 on the 100mhz board. Still.. getting back to it, from what I can tell, we have pretty similar systems as far as the game goes, which is very relient on your type of CPU, so my suggestion is the TNT2 (you can check out some results of a survey done on SDOE and different setups on Razors site (was that Razor or Razer.. lol) but anyway, go check it out http://www.fightersquadron.com/flightline

hmmmm.....based on reading a year's worth of posts on the subject every indication was that the FPS in glide (3dfx) was much better than a comparable system/non-3dfx card in 3D3. Go to STef's Gazette, he has some survey info. which supports this. The best combo for SDOE was Pentium/Voodoo not AMD/non-3dfx. Sorry if this is wrong. I can't speak from experience, only what I read here. I've only run it on Pentium/Voodoo.IP: Logged |

Jerry, can you post a url for STef's Gazette... don't know my way around yet.I could probably have found a better computer shopping around awhile, but I needed first and foremost a cheap writing machine, and quickly. Gaming was a secondary consideration... weird I know. Thanks Patrick IP: Logged |

After more thought, the Gazette has a different survey. Razor747's Flight Line has the FPS survey. Sorry. http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Village/2073/flightline.htm IP: Logged |

I got AMD K6II-400 MHZ, 64MB, TNT2 CARD and when I got some action on the screen (i.e. 2 lancasters/B17 attacked by 2 or 3 fighters) my FPS goes down to 7-10 (with full detail on). I dont know if this belongs to the CPU, the Graphic board or to the small RAM.Also youŽll get some graphic bugs with the TNT2 cards. IP: Logged |

I'm having a bit of a heat problem with the 3DFX V3 3000 card at the moment, and am trying to work with 3DFX to fix it.IP: Logged |

What sort of bugs from the TNT2? Do they outweigh the advantage of the extra 16 megs?I found a somewhat better computer at the same place--K6-2 450 with 64 megs and twice the hard drive--for less than $100 more, so I just changed my order moments ago. (No OS or monitor, but I have a line on those.) Patrick IP: Logged |

well, I wouldn't jerk yer chain, the TNT1 runs faster than the Voodoo3 on my AMD system, but as I said, I suspect thats down to the CPU (FPU). I know the Voodoo should be alot faster, but for me it's not, they are within 5 fps of each other, and I have to say, for me, there is no differnce in FPS running the voodoo in glide or D3D, infact, the game for me looks better in D3D.. like I said though.. don't ask me why.. lol, it's always stumped meIP: Logged |

You should check older posts for info on the graphical problems with the TNT2. There has been alot of queries concerning textures and 'jaggies'...IP: Logged |

Hell, with all the stuff going on with upcoming video cards that will absolutely blow your mind, one temporary solution might be to pick up 2 12mb Voodoo 2 boards, maybe even used for about $50 a pop, and run them in SLI utilizing the Glide settings.I get pretty decent frame rates, and then after a while you could get one of these new fire-breathing monsters that are coming out. Well, i don't know crap about motherboards but, i'm running a Viper V770-for 2D/3D(TNT2)and a voodoo2 for Exceleration. I run SDOE in Glide with the voodoo2 and average about 60 to 100 FPS. Don't know if this helps, but i figured i'd let u know. Good luck:-)P.S.-I have a P3-500, with 128meg. ram, so i'm not sure how these cards would work on a K6 machine. ------------------ Sparky=FC= IP: Logged | |
