Hey Burkey.. well, the first obvious Q is.. how are you trying to connect, first time I played online I naturally thought we had to use IP addresses in the same way Quake and Unreal do etc. but SDOE doesn't, you need to go through the Internet option, you should find a listing of the servers there, join us any night in Cali12 around 10/10:15 EST

Are you connected to the internet when you fire up the game? Are you behind some sort of firewall or proxy server? It sounds like you do see the Internet choice in the listbox? Is there something unusual about your network connection, like an oddball DUN driver or something?

Tell me more precisely what you see. From the main screen you choose Network. You see a listbox with probably Internet in it. Do you also see TCP/IP LAN and/or IPX? If so, which is highlighted when you click OK?

Basically, that message says that we asked ActiveNet to try to start up the network protocol that's highlighted and that ANet wasn't happy about something. If you see the Internet choice, then the DLLs are probably in place.

Thanks for the replies! Mighty, I fire up the game, click Network and in the Next screen I am offered the choices that you stated. I click on 'Internet',highlighting this option and then I click on the 'next' tab at the bottom of the screen and nothing happens. I then double click on 'Internet', a message then appears saying ' unable to initiate Network'. I'm operating from home with a standard service provider so I cant see any sort of firewall being my problem. I did however look in my 'Anet' folder in the 'Fighter Squadron' folder and it contains no files. Should it? Thanks again for your help guys, I think SDOE is the best dogfighting sim I've played and I'd love to go online. This is very frustrating!

In your Fighter Squadron folder you should have anet2.dll and in the ANet folder you should have winets2.dll, wipx2.dll and wudplan.dll. By chance, have you left the Windows default option to hide system files? Maybe they're there and you just can't see them.

Still, it might be worth it to reinstall everything. I know it seems like a waste of time, but it's amazing how often that fixes odd behavior on Windows machines.

First, uninstall.
Delete the Fighter Squadron folder.
Install SDOE.
Install the v1.5 patch.
Install the 5.3 Plane Pack.

Let me know how it turns out.

Still no joy after a reinstall. Now if I double click on 'Internet' a few times I can click 'next', but this crashes me to the desktop. By the way, Mighty, a stupid question; how do I check my windows defaults to see if I have it at 'hide system files'?

In Win98, bring up an Explorer window. View|Folder options|View tab. In the group of three "Hidden Files" radio buttons choose "Show all files."

Who is your ISP? And to repeat sex' question, do you play any other games online? Any problems with any of them?

Also, do you have the latest video and sound drivers? Video drivers in particular on Windows are reknowned for causing odd crashes in seemingly unrelated parts of the program. It might be worth getting the latest or reinstalling what you have.

BTW, we don't trap the double-click. Just highlight the one you want and choose Next.

still no luck, drivers updated but im still getting the 'unable to initialize network' error. Then, once i've attempted this and I try to quit the program, I get the 'this program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down' message. I wish I could sort this and get where all the fun is!

Success! I read a message in another forum, from MK10 which highlighted the fact that some people had unzipped PP3a into the FS folder and not media folder, this included me, and now I'm ready for online play! Thanks to everybody here for their suggestions, hope to see you soon online!

Ok, I know I should have posted a new topic, but I thought its almost the same problem Burkey had.

I am able to get through the screens mentioned and the servers show up with their respective pings, however, when I choose a server and enter, the lobbies show up with no people present. (example: Ace's Den 0/30)

I've tried going online at different times and everytime, there are no people in the lobby.

Does anyone know why this is happening, or am I going online at the wrong times?

Harman_5;

Have you tried checking the server prior to going on, for activity? There is a link to it from the main menu here ( fightersquadron.com ). Or if you have ICQ, have you tried the Active List for SDOE?

Sometimes the time difference from the server check to getting to the lobby will cause you to see no one, but a game may be in progress....generally, if it shows a game and/or someone in the lobby, you will run across someone. Hope this helps.

Harmon, another way of saying it is, we don't show games in progress from within the game. When we layed out those screens we thought we didn't have enough room to do that. There is a web site you can check to see if anyone is currently playing:

http://www.fightersquadron.com/ServerList/SDOEServerList.htm

If there's a game in progress, just wait in the lobby. Most games last 15 minutes or so. Then everyone will come out, brag about what they saw, and someone will start a new game that you can join.

Thanks for the info guys.

One question though, is it possible to join games in progress or am I pushing it too far?

Thanks.

Oh heck, you're not pushing it too far, but no, you can't join games in progress.

Rather than an "arena" style sim, everybody joins a mission and then the mission is launched.

And while we're on the subject, when you join a mission from the lobby, you will probably then go to a screen where you have a red "x" by your name.

This red "x" indicates that you do not currently have the mission that is being played. Don't worry. The host will "send" you the mission.

You will then see a screen that wants you to press "yes" or "no." If you have a red "x" the answer is "yes." If you don't have a red "x" the answer is "no." You may be asked yes or no a bunch of times depending on how often the host has to send the mission to the folks who are flying.

Remember, if you see a red "x" it's "yes."

If you don't have a red "x" it's "no."

Hope this proves helpful, and look forward to seeing you online soon!
