I was wondering if its possible to have several planes of the same type with different skins accessible within the game?

No

But you can have more than one type of the same plane created as seperate aircraft. This would make a bit of a mess, but I think it is still somewhat of a viable idea. Basicaly there would be two seperate planes, identical except for the texture images.

I would say this might work for say two squadrons with their markings, but never personal markings.... maybe.

Have tried this. I have several 'different' aussie spits as aircraft which all sit under my beta aussie country in the hanger.

They all work fine offline (I presume you'd get a mismatch online) except when you put them in the same mission .... then they all adopt just the one skin.

If there is a way around this I'd like to know.

Cheers,

I guess it might not be possible, but maybe the other guys know better.. I'm sure you've seen Unreal, well, online you can pick which skin you want, and everyone in the game see's your skin, so it can be done... but maybe not in SDOE, all I know is that to do it, everyone must have the same skin sets.

To me it seems a logical thing to add into the game if at all possible.. alot of us fly with squadrons online, so then we can have our own squadron numbers/markings, and have even more realistic actions.

I'd be grateful for anyone to look into the possibility of doing this with SDOE

I guess Multi-skin is out of the question. Per Senior members.

I did this last July. Got flamed.

Yes it works online like a champ. (All players need the same files. for operation. No Different than the Plane Packs "DATA*.PAR and a/c folders)

Yes it is a lot of work.

Yes you can do it with any of the planes made
Fighters etc

Yes you can have multi-sounds, Engine, gear, etc

No they didn't add it to the plane packs

yes 4 is the maximum number of schemes

yes you need a fast machine

yes clouds will lose a bit in their quality

yes there are problems with fighters used with bombers with multi-skin

yes, it was an interesting project

no, I canned all the files

yes, you can do it too, IF you have the tools, patience, know-how.

sorry I am unable to help further on this.

But this should give you an indicator of what the multi-skin development results are.

4 identical planes can be painted different schemes requiring for plane type folders.
otherwise the better route is to have it in a DATA*.PAR file

4 planes must have different names Ex: B-17F, B-17G, B-17X, B-17E. This is done through use of the BIGMUNGER tool. NOTE VERY EXTENSIVE files when opened.

Hope you can do better.

rgrds,
TH

Spanky here...

I think the main problems are:

It makes a mess of the planes

and it takes double the video ram

I agree with Spanky on the video memory issue. With all the new aircraft in the game we are already hitting the limits of many peoples systems. If you add an individual texture for every plane in a mission you are going to push even more people closed to that limit.

What I think would be a more sensible idea is to have a generic texture for each aircraft class. We could then work out a system where the game would paste individual textures onto these planes representing flight codes or staffel numbers which would be visable to all.

This is what AOE did over 7 years ago and Mig Alley does currently (at least off-line, I didn't own it long enough to try it on-line).
