I have an AGP Voodoo3 OEM card (basically the V3 2000), and after about 3 - 5 minutes of playing, the system locks up, and is immediately preceded by portions of the screen becoming a bunch of pixelated colors (like a "kaleidescope" block pattern).

I think I've narrowed it down to a problem when the V3 starts using main system memory (in addition to its own on-board 16 Mb). MS Combat Flight Simulator apparently shares this problem, but that problem is fixed by a setting in its config file - I can't find a similar setting in the sdemons.ini file.

Is there any way I can disable using main system memory for video (I want to limit the Voodoo3 to using its on-board memory)? My bios can limit the amount of main system memory used (AGP aperture size?), but I don't think it can be set to zero and disabled.

Please help...I need to play longer than 3 - 5 minutes at a time!

Thanks,

Pat

Just curious- I probably don't have a clue- but do you run the game in Glide? Anytime people have had problems with the game regarding their cards, I usually see a response asking if the person has the latest drivers for the card, so do you? Beyond that, I'll leave it to my colleagues- who may not answer right away as they are in the midst of a grand contest (see the topic area labelled "The Contest".

I don't have a V3 but I had heaps of these problems with supposed good drivers from the OEM'er. I downloaded the 3dfx reference drivers and no probs.

An interesting thing...in DirectX, there is no lock-up...only happens in Glide...???

I did have a Glide driver that was a few months old (September), so I updated to the December one (along with DirectX 7), and although it improved things, I still get a lock-up after a while (it just takes longer now before it locks up).

All other stuff is the most recent versions...hardware drivers, patches, etc.

I'd love to hear any more ideas...

After a lot of troubleshooting, I **think** I found a fix. I changed the "AGP Aperture Size" in my bios from the default value of 64 Mb (my system has 128 Mb RAM) to the lowest value possible: 4 Mb. So far, no lock-ups.

I think I'll post a message to Michael on this...

I had lockups with my Voodoo3 3000 too. After 30sec - 1min of playing, I would loose control of the plane and plummet to ground, followed by a lockup. Sometimes an instant lockup.

First I thought it was the V3 overheating, so I got an extra fan for it. Didn't help much.

Then I found out the reason, it was my overclocked processor. I had a P2-266 overclocked to 350, and that was the reason. Running at 333 or 300, no problems, even without the extra fan!

Don't know if this is of any help, but I like to share my misery with others
