Can I use AutoCadR14 to make 3d models or LODS or what you call them to make them work in OpenPlane? I've been fiddling with AC3d but I don't want to pay more money for a 3d program when I have a great one already. SV's page was a great help by the way.

Okay I've been thinking of registering AC3d, BUT!: To use scale drawings as blueprints in AC3d, you must (I read this off SV's page) scale them up using this formuls
pixels = dimension x 100
This makes large files doesnt it? I scaled up a few drawings this way and exported them to gif-format and ended up with a 350 K file
When I try to set this as a background, the program stops responding. I have 64 megs ram, so i would think my machine can handle it. Is there a limit in Ac3d on background file size? Smaller files work just fine.

You should post OpenPlane questions at the OpenPlane Technical area - that way we will have all og the OpenPlane questions in one place

Yes, I have had that concearn as well - it does take a while to load - and can hang up some systems. Someone has suggested using optimized bmp files to solve this problem. Maybe AC3D has a workaround, but I have yet to find one (not that I looked to hard heheh)

Right now only AC3D has LOD import/export plugins - and OpenPlane Studio can import and export obj files that are used with 3dsmax - a high end ($) 3D editor. I think some other 3D programs can use obj files as well, but I don't know which ones...

Well it did work..It takes about four mintues to load a 350 k gif file as background and the system seems to lock up but really its damn slow. Is this the same in the registered version? I have one workaround, that is drawing in AutoCad and exporting them to truespace, and then exporting them to OpStudio...heh, timeconsuming yes. And my Acad has no background picture loading capability yet..
What i basically feel is wrong with Ac3d is that there is no visual snap feature (at least in the unregisterd, is there in the registered?) that helps with lining up polys and vertices.

Kraftwerk,

I don't use a background image. What I do is create a rectangle the size of the object I am making and texture it with the image.
You can only see it in the 3d window though.

Here's a pic:

You can find the position of a point in AC3D by selecting it and going to the edit menu and select "move to". This will give you the position of the point in a dialog box. Just select the point you want to move there and click on "move" on the dialog box.
