I don't believe the "50 die of famine" one. 50% of the world's population does NOT starve to death. Hell, China and India together make up 1/2 of the world's population and few of them are starving to death. Makes me wonder how many of the other statistics are wrong.IP: Logged |

I have been checking around and within its confines, it's quite acurate as far as my cusory survey reveals. The famine one did strike me as odd too, and I think it could be stated clearer whatever they actually mean by it.------------------ Be seeing you, 3dp Visit RAF Harkness! IP: Logged |

3dp, the world's population is 4 billion, (maybe 5). Are you saying that 2 billion of them will starve to death? Where did you read that? If you include diseases from being under-nourished maybe. But that is not famine, which is starving to death. Disease is as much a health issue as a food issue.IP: Logged |

Estimates are that a major-crop blight would send US into starvation in 6 months. The technology of plant genetics keeps the hybrid (clone) crops one step ahead of disease. We could all end up starving to death if an AIDS like disease hit our seed-crops. There is no safety in life, death is one step behind you for most of your life, it is how things work. Yeah, and fire breathing monsters could wipe out most of the U.S. in 6 months too. What is the likelyhood of a disease which can kill our wheat, corn, rice, potatos and soybeans suddenly appearing? IP: Logged |

Risk is relative. I'd say relatively high but not certain... and nothing I lose sleep over.I bet the people of Ireland didn't expect a potato blight (although their problems were due to more than a shortage of spuds). Cloned life enables an attacking disease to rapidly spread through the entire population. Each clone has the same weaknesses as all its neighbors. Just like when Microsoft Outlook or IIS is targeted by a "virus" which exploits a specific weakness that is present in all "copies" of the software. IP: Logged |

I aint even gonna get into the debate, all I'll sw is I looked at it before there were any replies here, and felt very insulted by it, so much so that I didn't reply even to slam it, it reminds me very much of a Holiday thing you see in maney offices done as a joke, about asking for a day off, I'll have to see if I can find a copy online and post it.IP: Logged |

Here we go, that flash vidoe must have been done by the same person that wrote the following, because I guess although the stats are spot on, it doesn't mean it's the truth, which is the point here I think:"Day Off, a Boss's Perspective" So, you want the day off? Let's take a look at what you are asking for. There are 365 days per year available for work. There are 52 weeks a year in which you already get 2 days off per week, leaving 261 days available for work. Since you spend 16 hours each day away from work, you have used up 170 days, leaving 91 days available. You spend 30 minutes a day on a coffee break. That accounts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days available. With one Hour for lunch period each day you use up another 46 days, leaving only 22 days available to work. You normally spend 2 days a year for sick leave. This leaves you only 20 days available for work. We are off for 5 holidays per year, so your available working time is down to 15 days. We generously give you 2 weeks off for vacation per year. This only leaves 1 day available for work. And I'll be darned if you're going to take that day off!!

Jerry,No I wasn't saying that. I thought I was clear in my previous post that I thought that specific statistic was vague at best. Perhaps it's what you suggested, i.e. including famine-related disease, but also as you said, that's not strictly famine/starving to death. I'm with you on this one, it's pretty unclear. ------------------ Be seeing you, 3dp Visit RAF Harkness! IP: Logged |

Sorry 3dp. Since my post rejected the famine statistic I thought that when you said "I have been checking around and within its confines, it's quite acurate as far as my cusory survey reveals.", I thought you were referring just to the 50% famine figure. That's why I asked, where you read it (during your cursory survey). Misunderstanding, my fault.IP: Logged |

You're right Spanky. If only 1/3 of the world is starving it's hardly worth worrying about. P.S. I don't believe the 33% either. IP: Logged |
