Gunner,
Being a retired submariner I had to give it a try. Like you I've found I'm disappointed with it as it is out of the box. I have both Silent Hunter and Command Aces of the Deep. Although old sims they did things right. SH2 may be prettier, but it is a let down in comparison with these older sims. Even the "fanboy" types are begining to admit that the number of bugs, an AI that makes modern Anti-Submarine Warfare units look terrible, the choice of a rather limited and short linear campaign and many design choices need to be fixed.A lot of folks seem willing to sacrifice the single player mode beause they say on line play against those with Destroyer Command will make up for it. Considering that the MP portion of SH2 and Destroyer Command are not out yet I think this is more a statement of faith not fact. Will be interesting to see if this will actual work or not.
The only saving grace that I see so far is that the code is open. Mod makers might be able to improve this sim enough to make it worth it. If SH2 gets a community similar to SDOE WWII and WWI then it may become a great sim....guess I will just wait and see...meantime SH2 has been retired to the book shelf.
