I almost didn't get IL2 today because nobody had it!On my way home from class, I stopped at Comp USA and they didn't have IL2. Then I stopped at Best Buy and still nothing. My last hope was electronics boutique. I went into the store and didn't see IL2 anywhere, now I was getting worried. So I went over to where the girls were unpacking the boxes of new games and I heard the girl say, "I bet nobody has even heard of this one" and she pulled out 10 copies of IL2. I immediatly asked if I could have one of the copies right out of the box, she looked at me in a sort of stunned way because there I was, the only person who knew anything about this game in the whole store, and then she said yep no problem. This game is amazing, ditto what Argon said, must go back and play more ------------------ -Blacksheep http://geocities.com/jays3299/toshindo.html IP: Logged |

Afraid I will have to agree with Argon, up to a point. This was a sim I was prepared to really dislike - too ambitious. But I tried the demo...to make fun of it the way I did, I owed the genre that much.Well, I am here to say I was wrong about the sim. I still only have the demo - I pick up my release copy tomorrow - but the demo won me over. I have played it a lot since getting it, and quite a bit online ( where it works, in demo at least, beautifully ), and I keep being more impressed each time I fire it up. Yes, it lacks much of what I want in a sim - mostly, it lacks European theater, England, and the Spitfire - but it is a marvellous piece of work. That is just my opinion, but it deserves IMO all the kudos that can be tossed it's way. It has great features, and it runs well...if the release can live up to the demo, then it will certainly have a place on my HD for many hours to come. It will never supplant my favorites, but it will get lots of playing time on my PC. Perfect WW2 sim? No, there I disagree, it is not perfect - far from it. It has it's flaws - thank God. Thankfully, though, they don't interfere with my playing it, and that is pretty refreshing all on it's own. ------------------ nealg=FC= [This message has been edited by nealg (edited 11-21-2001).] IP: Logged |

The demo sucked? How so?!?!?! I thought the demo was pretty darned good! Better than most released games! :confused:You went into EB and asked them if they got it in? When I went in, they hadnt even unpacked it yet and stuck it on the shelves. But he knew of the game and promptly got it for me. :D I rused out of the mall so fast after I paid for it, it would make your head spin! ;) IP: Logged |

I think I will ask for it for christmas as right now I'm too broke to buy it for myself Those who don't like it cause its not europe, oh well, big freaking deal. I'm also sick of europe all the time. Think of it this way, if its a great sim why not try it out? Maybe other theaters will grow on ya. Plus if you support the GOOD sims out there maybe a european one will be released. What is Oleg working on next I can't remember? IP: Logged |

Guys i didnīt say that this not a great sim! It realy is one, well what i can see so far in the demo. And i want to buy it if it comes in stores next week. But sometimes it looks that only one sim can be on our harddisks. Hmm, i have room for more so if i install IL2 the sim will stand site by site to SDOE. And iīm sure i play both sims in future!Rendsburger IP: Logged |

tere's one reason I don't like IL2, and it MIGHT be a reason I don't buy it, and the strange thing is I was realy looking forward to IL2.Ther reason (as Argon and Jeeves know from our talks) is that I get absolutely no feeling of distance when I'm in the cockpit. I look at a Ju88 ahead in SDOE and I can see how far away it is, I look at one in IL2 and it looks as though the Ju88 is a texture image painted on the windscreen and I can only tell I'm close when I'm REALY close. Now, I don't buy maney games at all, infact the only game I play is Unreal Tourny+Chaos MOD, SDOE I sometimes build for but not as much as I used to, and thats all. I realy was looking forward to IL2, but after playing the demo I'm realy not to sure now. I'm not knocking the game because it's plain for all to see that it realy looks great, but if I can't get used to flying the demo, then I doubt I'll buy the final release, why buy a flight sim if I can't fly the damn thing LOL IP: Logged |

They sorta improved that a bit with the final release. Although in the distance, you still see the little squadres, but they are smaller and less squarish looking, but I have no problem with range in this sim. IP: Logged |

How is the performace guys? Compared to the demo I mean. I'm running the demo and its all smooth except for smoke, Like startup, explosions and somtimes clouds. I'm running a duron 750 with 256megs DDR and a voodoo 3 2k. I'm running in D3D, I could try GL. So is it any better? Worse? Hows large groups of planes? I'm going to fire up the demo right now and load a mission FULL of planes just to see how my machine handles it.

I loaded up a mission with tons of planes. 4 under each pull down. It got choppy of course but it was also smooth at times, it seems to peform better then SDOE. I really wish it had a frame rate display. I think all sims should and let you know the lowest, highest and average FPS after a mission so you can tune your computer and game settings for best performace. IP: Logged |

IL2 ROCKS!!! This sim is the best yet, and yes it is better than SDOE so you can lock me up now. The one thing I will say about mid to lower pc's, yes you will be able to run the sim but you'll have to cut off a lot of options for the game to run good. When you do this you'll have a much harder time seeing the enemy aircraft (that is if the tags are off).------------------ 7./JG3_Himdog out www.luftwaffe.net IP: Logged |

Cool stuff, thanks for the info ArgonV. Condor, I'm running an extra 250Mhz and double the ram but a slightly slower voodoo3 2000. I would say download the demo and try it out. You should get more ram though. I'm not sure if you can upgrade the chip cheaply, I can never find P2s or 3s used at a respectable price. I'm running at 1024x768x16bit, and my settings are around medium I think. Like I said they need a frame rate counter so I can tune the settings. IP: Logged |

Spanky, yes I mentioned a FPS counter to Oleg a while back (Along with alot of other people) but it didnt get added I think. You might want to consider going to a Voodoo 5 5500 or even a GeForce 2 MX 200 or 400. You will see HEAPS of difference. IP: Logged |

well...it takes WAY too many cannon hits to bring down a large plane (except with the LaGG 3-T1)2nd im running a 16 mb Riva TNT2....at 800x600x16, im running maybe 5-8 fps lack of variety in flyable planes...and i do know this is being worked on the quick mission editor doesnt have enough options..the full mission edtor has WAY too many and is too difficult to use (for me at least)..i need something in between realistic smoke: the ultimate frame rate eater laser-like projectiles i can dive 90 degrees down on a target and drop my bombs...and miss every single time [This message has been edited by Vahnatai (edited 11-22-2001).] IP: Logged |

Vahnatai is right about the full mission editor, it is very hard to figure out and use. I'll take the SDOE M/E any day over the IL2 M/E. I also expected 31 different flyable aircraft, and really it's more like 10 variations of each plane. But the aircraft that are in the game are fantastic and I'm sure with add ons it will get much more variety. The only other problem I have is that the game is power hungry. I have a 1.1 ghz athlon, 256 RAM, and a 64mb GeForce 2 GTS, and the game still gets slow when there are lots of aircraft in the sky. I'm considering another stick of 256 RAM making 512 total, hopefully that will sure the problem. Other then that I think IL2 is a fantastic flight Sim, one of the best ever, but mind you this game will never replace SDOE for me. The variety of terrain and aircraft in SDOE, and the great community will always keep me flying SDOE I'm just playing IL2 untill SDOE II comes out . ------------------ -Blacksheep http://geocities.com/jays3299/toshindo.html IP: Logged |

Vahnatai,Too many cannon hits to bring down an aircraft? I admit the regular machine guns take a bit (thats proven to be realistic tho...) but I can shoot down an aircraft no problem with the cannons... Maybe your confusing some machine guns with cannons? 16 megs?!? LoL yeah I would complain too if I had a 16 meg graphics card still... You cant expect todays games to run on a 2-3 year old computer my friend, same goes with consoles! What is your current box setup? I would have to agree with both of you on the lack of many aircraft to fly... But then again, SDOE only shipped with 10, and one of each variant! At least IL-2 has given us a chance to fly aircraft that basicly no sim comes shipped with. Im thankful that IL-2 IS Eastern Front. The quick mission editor is ok, but like you, I wish it had one option: The ability to set yourself or enemy aircraft on the ground/water for take offs. Ive breifly looked over the Full editor, I must say its alot! But I never complain about having too many options. I have the patience and skill to learn it, as Im sure we all do. You just have to learn it just like weve learned how to use SDOE. Yeah with that 16 meg graphics card you have, smoke would make the sim very jerky for you. But Ive played it on a Voodoo 5 5500, GeForce 2 and GeForce 3 and those cards handled it very nicely. I would suggest at least getting a GeForce 2 MX 200 or 400. You can pick one of those up for $99.00 U.S. or less. Have you seen gun footage in color? To me IL-2 looks just like that. Most of us are all just acustomed to the unrealistic gun fire thats all orange or red and slow moving. Its not the sims fault you cant aim... Blacksheep, what API are you running? OpenGL or D3d? If its OpenGL, I have some custom settings that will give you a FR boost with little or no loss in quality. IP: Logged |

Ok, I have the release, and a few quick impressions:The release is NOT as smooth as the demo. This may be because of terrain. I ran everything maxed except clouds in the demo. Had to turn down some detail in the release. 95% of it runs beautifully on my PIII933 with GeForce 2 MX 32 meg ( running in 1024x768x16 OpenGL) and SB Live ( I decided to use the SB Live card settings, and they are great ). However...in certain missions, at certain spots - seems to be a city or large body of water type thing - my screen will lock completely for a few seconds, then 'drop' back into the action. Which has continued while I was 'paused'. I have tried over a dozen different settings and combos, and none help. It isn't a game stopper - although it could play Hell with online play - and it is liveable for me, but it is rather irritating. I would presume it is video related, as prolonged HD activity accompanies it. It doesn't seem to happen with the Smolensk terrain...which, BTW, is the terrain in the demo. I spent more time troubleshooting this problem than I did getting Battle of Britain to run well. Other than that, the release version is fantastic. As to planes and gunnery, though - I find gunnery easier than the demo, and planes seem to take damage easier. At least, the ones I shoot at. I ain't complaining there! FM's seem changed, but hard to really say...only had 3 planes in demo. There are numerous variants of the same plane to make up the 31 flyable, yes, but each handles just a bit differently from it's predecessor - and I find the Yak 1 B to be totally impossible to take off in. One thing hasn't changed for me from SDOE - I STILL can't hit anything with bombs! ------------------ nealg=FC=

NealWeird, because I'm having the exact opposite experience. The full version (thus far) has been a bit smoother then the demo. In those rare moments in the demo where I had a stutter, I get none now. I even bumped up my settings. I wish I knew where to offer advise, but I have no clue what the problem could be. I do know that I have read of others experiencing the same problems, so it's not just you. I'm hopeful there will be a fix forthcoming. My fingers are crossed. I hope you get it running smoothly soon...I made two missions today that I need you to help me check out. Later buddy! PR=TC= IP: Logged |
