I'd like to get a system with these two guys in it. Any suggestions for bare bones package deals around the net? Thanks

I've had a very hard time getting my Via chipset Tbird.9 to work with Win 2k. Specifically, the sound breaks up any time the hard drive is accessed. I understand this is common with VIA chipsets. It will be worth your time to make sure the config you are interested in is compatible in practice (not just theory!) with Win2k (assuming you use it).Otherwise I can't help you IP: Logged |

Well I'm still deciding on with OS to go with. Believe it or not I'm still using old Win98 and like it a lot for games.IP: Logged |

I have a KT7a-Raid, a 1.33C t-bird and 1g of ram under win 2k. The Gainward G3 works nicely in it. I still need to fine tune things onboard to get some good speed with the Geforce3.IP: Logged |

I would avoid the older via chipsets. If you want to go with an athlon based system you HAVE to do your homework. the VIA KT266a, nforce and sis 735 chipsets are the ones to go with right now. AMD is pulling out of the chipset market (chipset as in north and southbridge). Make sure you get a GOOD power supply also, seems the faster amd chips can be picky and hungry for power. I'm running a sis735 chipset board and I like it. I hear good things about www.newegg.com on the tech site I'm always at. www.ars-technica.com Go there join the forum and post a well thought out question. Probly in the other hardware or cpu/motherboard sections. List what you want to do with it, what parts you KNOW you want (like you did above) and why. They are great at suggesting parts and finding good online deals. IP: Logged |

Pete, seems a lot of the Via chipset(and some intel ones too) probs are made a lot worse when coupled with a soundblaster card, it seems Creative do not follow the PCI guidelines fully and corrupt other data running through the PCI bus when the bus is near its limit (Games in the main). I fixed all my probs with the latest Via 4in1 driver package but when I next upgrade I will be very careful on chipset selection.IP: Logged |

like you say Commando, it's a problem more with Sound Blaster I think, than with the via chipset itself, this is the fist time I've had an actual SB though (SB 1024), but I'm using the Via KT133a chipset and have no sound problems at all UNLESS running advanced cooling features through CPU Cool. On a purely personal note, I've no worries about using ViaIP: Logged |

I had a VIA kt133a chipset board. Even without ANY soundcard at all and trying all the hacks, fixes and 4in1 updates (and beta bioses) I was getting data corruption problems. Avoid the via kt133a chipset boards like the plauge. Theres no good reason to buy them anyways, they are old tech. Via kt266a, Sis 735 and Nforce chipsets are all faster and all support the newer chips and DDR. IP: Logged |

The Kt133a are kinda old now, the chipset came out about 6 months back, but for people like me they are great (I guess if you get a board that works ok with it), it's basicaly a DDR board that will take standard 133/100 SDRAM, so me being unemployed it's a good stop gap between full DDR boards needing new memory, and this board being fast and using the memory I already have but if you have the money to get a full DDR board I see no need to buy one like mine.IP: Logged |

I got the ECS K7S5A board for 115 Canadian. My asus a7v133 board was 200 Can So I got a DDR board cheaper then an older kt133a chipset board. It supports both so I was able to use my SDram until I had the money to put in some DDR. Some of these board are having a problem with some 1.4gig Athlons though. So I wouldn't recommend it at this time. Supposedly it works just fine with the new XP chips though. The board is on the AMD recommended list but ONLY for the XP chips. AMD changed a couple specs on its chips and the board wasn't changed to work with it or something wacky. Remember when it used to be easy to buy parts guys and they pretty much always worked just fine? IP: Logged |

damn good deal Smokey, but just like you said, it's not easy these days, hell even motherboards with exactly the same chipsets can give you competely different results, thats realy not helping, thats why I think posts like this one are more than justified, you just can't get enough info these days, and if you can ask a large group of people like us for feedback on everyday use and experience rather than pure website info, you just gotta do it.I just hope we do help and don't make it harder to choose LOL IP: Logged |
