I installed this bugger again after upgrading, but now, whenever I try to fly, the computer locks up completely, and I have to push the restart button. The strange thing is that I can select a lesson and let the instructor show me how to do it, but whenever I select the option to fly myself, presto, the screen goes black, and the computer locks up. I tried installing the patch, but it won't install!
I read somewhere that it only runs with CD 2, but it won't run with any of them.

My system:
AMD T-Bird 1GHz
256mb 133 Ram
GeForce 2MX-400 with 64mb Ram
26 gigabyte HD, with about two gigs left.

Semmern,
I've just installed FU3 agin on my machine, only to find that mine is doing exactly what you've described. I'm running the same system as last time i had it installed, so that couldn't be the problem,
which makes me think it might be some sort of time/date related thing.

Go to Guru3d.com and update your video drivers. Others report trying different drivers fixes the problem. Similar things happen in FS2K2.

I downloaded the patch from www.3dupdates.com
It's called fu3p20uk.zip, get that one, not the one called fu3patch.exe. That fixed the problem for me. Ah, it's good to be back in the Lake Renegade cokcpit .
