I think the History Channel had something
on about it a while back. I thought they said
something like 750 military personnel were
lost in the incident.

Been there

It's an odd place...nothing much there except the shingle beach, a road along the causeway and a ree-filled lagoon behind. There is a simple monument that commemorates the events that took place, and a few of the local museums have some pretty good stuff on the place.

Apparantly, the local kids use the road as a dragstrip in the evenings....

This was one of those tragedies that got covered up, but is pretty well known over here. Well... I grew up in that neck of the woods so I knew abot it...
