Macleans (a weekly news mag kinda like time)posts the whole magazine as far as I can tell, on line.

Most if it is talking about the whole war thing and stuff.

There is a story about Canadas part in the war on terror.

Seems we are sending the largest fleet we have sent out since the Koren war, and are 3 in amount of military commitment, behind USA and Britian.

Five ships 6 planes (no f18s, I guess the carriers have that covered) and about 2000 personal (I'm guessing they are talking navy people) and about 100 members of joint task force 2 (Canadian special forces) who might see ground action.

I would have thought we sent more for the gulf war? I know we sent 24 F18s then.

Anyways I just thought some Americans would like to hear about help from us.

There is also a story on anti-Americanism (is that a word?)

And just a comment on the whole deal.

They said on the news the other day, CBC I tnink it was, that they're not sending the pidgeons because our CF-18's have no arrestor hook. The guys are carrier qualified though. At least according to a pidgeon buddy of a buddy of mine. As to the numbers, there are a lot of boat people on those assorted boats. And as I recall for the Gulf fracas, we only sent a few pidgeons and a field hospital. I guess they weren't counting the boat people then. We don't have anything else. Not after 30 years of Liberal and Conservative gutting the CF.

Yeah I just figured that the US had the fighter/bomber area covered.

And that we didn't send any ground troop stuff cause no one knows whats happening next.

I'll be glad if its mostly or all special forces going in on the ground, thats always how I thought it should be.

I've been soaking up as much as I can from the grad students and doc.s in the polisci and mil/strat studies departments, and learned a lot of interesting things lately. In regards to our deployment:

-Note that the only planes over Afghanistan that are flying combat sorties (perhaps all planes, period) are American. Why? Operationally it was a nightmare during the Kosovo raids because the US has better kit than Canada or European countries, and our planes couldn't talk to each other. To communicate they had to get real close and use hand signs. I suppose they could also communicate via ground relay, but again it is far from ideal. This way with only US planes its one less thing to go wrong.

About JTF2, I think most people up here went "huh, we have commandos?". Well actually we don't - my understanding is that JTF2 are trained in domestic stuff, like storming hijacked airliners on the ground, embassy buildings, etc. Not SAS-style prolonged insertions or even SEAL-style operations. Perhaps they're getting some retraining from the SAS but it's awfully short notice.

Just a couple tidbits...

btw HMCS Vancouver returned from exercises in the Pacific yesterday or the day before, and will be shipping out for the war in a couple days. Saw it in the paper today.

Btw, watched an interview with Gen. Henault (sp?) after dinner tonight, it seems CF-18s are flying patrols over Canadian and some US cities, and five European NATO AWACS have also deployed to cover the US, and Canada if need be.
