Hey Guys,

Been away for a while but I'm back to tell you about something that I just read this morning while cruising the web and it is related to air-combat.

We used an AC-130 gunship vs. the Taliban in Kandahar yesterday. They said that witnesses in Kandahar said that parts of the city appeared to turn to dust. Appeared to turn to dust? Hell, with an aircraft that can lay down enough fire to cover every square inch of a football fire would turn anything in that area into nothing. If memory serves me, this type of gunship aircraft has not seen service, well they did use the old "Puff the Magic Dragon" in Viet-Nam but I don't think that the current AC-130 has every fired a shot in anger.

Boy did the Taliban and Al-Queida piss-off the wrong country. Eat lead you animals and lots of it. Love live the USA

Yep, you are right and wrong. The aircraft they used is the new AC-130U Spectre which is even meaner than it's predecessors. Still, it does not matter whether either of us is right or wrong......what matters is that the good old US of A has weapons such as this at our disposal.

Yeah guys this is a realy awesome airplane!
Aeroplanemonthly had a story about this plane last month!
Check out the pictures!!!!! OMG !!!

Found this on the web:
AFSOC is the Air Force's most irregular division. In formal terms, they describe their mission as "unconventional warfare, counter-proliferation, direct action, psychological operations, special reconnaissance, civil affairs, combating terrorism, foreign internal defense, and information operations." What this means exactly is often shrouded in the red tape of Pentagon secrecy, but AFSOC aircraft are assumed to be involved in so-called 'black operations'; those demanding deep and clandestine penetration of hostile (or friendly!) territory. The troopers might be interdicting enemy supply lines, transporting spies or raiding teams or sabotaging enemy communications networks. Rescuing downed aircrew or POW's is also part of their brief.
Paving the way
Until now the two aircraft most commonly associated with AFSOC were heavily-modified C-130 Hercules planes and the Sikorsky MH-53J Pave Low helicopter. The C-130's are set up in a multitude of different formats for use as transport, electronic warfare and even TV broadcasting. The most interesting version is the C-130U "Spooky" gunship, which features a side-firing 105mm howitzer! The Pave Lows were used for low-level infiltration and rescue missions.

... keep your head down

Actually, the Spectre was used in Vietnam too, that was why it was made in the first place. The USAF needed a replacement for Puff (the AC-47) and they asked Lockheed. The first gunship didn't have the 105mm howitzer, "only" four 7.62mm miniguns. The current Spectre has got twin 40mm's, twin (or quadruple - don't remember) miniguns and the howitzer. Some armament, huh?

In Vietnam the gunships had enough ammo to last 10 minutes only. In the new gunships, the payload capacity is high enough that they can carry ammo to stay on station for 45 minutes... Not there would be anything left after 45 minutes...

Oh yeah, they C130 gunships use the same Phalanx gunsystem the navy uses... The gun can aquire a new target and move accordingly in 300ms.

yeah, they are mean weapons. I remember reading about gunships in vietnam, they needed a guy to shovel spent shells from the plane....

The concept actually began in WWII. I know that the US (as well as others) modified B-25 with cannons and down pointing 50 cals mounted in the belly for straffing...

Andrews AFB had an airshow in 1999 that had one of the gunships on display. They appeared to work out the gun layout around the props and wings. The interesting part about the plane is that from a distance, you can't tell it apart from a transport plane due to the placement of the weaponry. The only way to tell that the plane was not a transport is when the building you are next to turns to a fine powdery substance and you see Puff's flames.
