LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - An Air Canada jetliner bound for Toronto has returned to Los Angeles with an escort of two U.S. fighter jets after a passenger caught smoking in the bathroom made an "anti-American threat," airline officials have said.

Air Canada Flight 792, a Boeing 767 with 148 people on board, landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport and the unruly passenger was taken into FBI custody along with a companion.

The incident came as U.S President George W. Bush unveiled new security measures intended to coax Americans back into the skies after hijacking attacks on New York and the Pentagon.

And the plane, accompanied by two U.S. Air Force F-16s, landed as California Gov. Gray Davis arrived at LAX for a press conference on airline safety, where he urged the people of his state to "make flying a way of life again."

An Air Canada spokeswoman said the passenger, who was not named, was "apprehended smoking in the lavatory" shortly after the plane's departure.

"The passenger became verbally abusive and uttered an anti-American threat," Air Canada said in a statement.

"There was no physical aggression," the statement said. "In-flight crew handled the situation professionally. The pilot elected to return to Los Angeles as a precautionary measure."

The plane's crew alerted officials on the ground and the fighter jets were scrambled to intercept it.

Air Canada spokesman Dick Griffith said the FBI had asked the airline not to disclose the nature of the threat or any identifying information about the passenger who was detained.

POLICE WITH GUNS STORM PLANE

Local television stations reported that police in flak jackets and carrying automatic weapons guns stormed the plane to remove the passenger at the rear of the cabin, warning others on the plane to stay down and out of harm's way.

"Consistent with heightened security awareness, local authorities implemented stringent security measures," the statement said. "Air Canada will not provide comments on details of security measures implemented by the authorities."

Griffith said the plane taxied to a secure area of the airport before passengers were taken to a special holding room for interviews and all baggage inspected. Flight 792 was expected to make its flight to Toronto later on Thursday.

Gov. Davis carried on his press conference, where he announced that he would dispatch California National Guard troops to LAX and other airports in the state to help ensure safety and reassure travellers.

"I wasn't officially notified although we were about 5 minutes out when those two jets buzzed the airport, so I knew something was up," Davis told reporters at the press conference.

Griffith said the pilot followed procedure in returning to LAX after the disturbance, though he said the September 11 hijacking attacks that left more than 6,500 people dead or missing "had some bearing" on the way the incident was handled.

Among the measures announced by President George W. Bush on Thursday were the deployment of National Guard troops at U.S. airports, more armed "air marshals" in the skies and better security for cockpits.

However, Canadian Transport Minister David Collenette said on Thursday it was unlikely his country's airlines would have armed marshals aboard flights. Instead, the country preferred to boost airport security, he told reporters in Ottawa.

Interesting, go to FW and read "Anyone see Primetime" For those that think that the US is the only target it will make for interesting reading.

I got yer Mac'n'cheese bin!

P

ABCNEWS;
He said;
bin Laden spoke to his class several times, warning that the United States and Israel wanted to destroy Islam, and that they must be destroyed first. He said his 18 fellow students were sent home to cities in to Canada, Middle East and Europe. He also said that the enemies of bin were the UK, Germany, Europe, and more that I can't remember. They were to wait, as sleeper agents, for instructions.

It amazes me that this bozo thinks anyone in the West cares about Islam. Mind you, it's easy to be a zealot when you're rich like he is. Not so easy for all those refugees he's scared into Pakistan.
I kind of think the military option could be offset by massive humanitarian aid to those 2 millions and the poverty stricken in Afghanistan. Help a guy feed his family and he'll be your friend. Most of the time.
Remembering not to say, "Give me your hearts
and minds or I'll burn your huts down."
Oh, and don't mess with Canadians or we'll smoke in your crappers!

An old Afgahni proverb I heard was that an Afgahni will follow you into Hell if your his friend, but if your his enemy you can't drag him to heaven.

Maybe it's the humanitarian in me but I agree with you Sunray. I would like to see the world get together and feed and clothe those people, it must be like hell over there. Maybe the best thing to happen to the Afghan’s was bin, I mean maybe this way the world is getting a eye full and will do something to help these poor people out. The Talaban's will have to go (whatever way) first so that the West can get over there and develop the country so that it will become self-sufficient. Did anyone happen to see the old pics of that city when it was a prosperous place, night and day difference. I feel real sad for those children and women over there and the young guys that were forced into the Talabastards army...

I keep seeing news film of Afgans. unloading sacks of wheat from trucks. The sacks all say "USA" on the side. No way of knowing how old the film is though.

I think it would be a better idea to go all-out and help the Pakistanis. Show Afganistan, Sudan, and the Pakistani bin Laden supporters how it pays to be on our side.

I think that’s most of the problems these days is that we (all of us) give with the expectations of – what’s in it for me. If we show that the West is not the aggressor and let the people of Afghanistan (not the military) see that we are willing to give them support in their tribulations we will gain favor. We don’t need to do this to eliminate the Talaban we need to do this because the people need our help. Most of what I’ve seen lately the Afghans hate the Talaban and want to see them overthrown, but you have to ask yourself, who’s next in power.
One thing that I think would be a mistake for the US to do is send that pile of shit Jackson over there. That would show Islam that we would rather rely on a adultery condoning rime making idiot to make our way in this conflict, not a good idea. Besides he’s a (so called) Christian and why would Islam consider anything he says.

I’m with you on Pakistan and other people that should benefit from their cooperation as I’m sure they will. But this is just the thing that some of the other peoples of the world hate about us is the “what’s in it for me” way that America shares its wealth.

Above all, we need to be fair over there. We need to show them that we value justice and fairness. Part of this can be shown by being absolutely clear who we want to get and why we want to get them. But we should also show compassion to the people who are helpless over there, who are victims of the Taliban themselves.
We are never (I hope) going to turn into a theocracy in the West. Islam won't ever "win" over here, they have to accept that. But they should also learn to respect us for our fairness and our judgement as well as our military might. Waffling over who we attack and which despots we support without a clear sense of justice behind it will only make them think we are chumps and targets.
