that ballpoint pens would not work in 0 gravity.To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion
developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on
almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from
below freezing to over 300C. ...The Russians used a pencil.

No sources on this but I thought they bought a bunch of pens the RAF had developed for high-altitude use.  Werner ------------------

I actually have one of these space pens! I bought it at NASA a couple of years back... Its a nice pen. I dont know if its the exact same one the astronauts use, but it looks cool...  IP: Logged |
