[Stupid question ahead.] I'm going to have to buy a new HD for Commandos 2 and Il-2. (Commandos 2 full install: 3 gigs!!!) I have an ATA-66 or 70-something, and I wonder if it's possible to install an ATA-100 disk. I don't need to have the same ATA number on all my HD's, do I?[This message has been edited by semmern (edited 09-07-2001).] IP: Logged |

semmern - you shouldn't. Just as you can run a 33 and 66 ( I have been doing so for over 2 years ), you should be able to put the ATA 100 in...it will just run at whatever the max is that your MB can support, or if it can support the 100, then with the proper drivers, it can run at that while your 66 should run ok too. Watch the connection ribbons, and use the ones which come with the 100, I believe, to get best performance.

Yep its no problem, ata 100 is backwards compatible with 66 and 33. BUT, did you just buy a new motherboard in the last couple months? What is it? It might support 100. IP: Logged |

a good idea might be to check that the MB supports ATA100 first.. you have a net connection, use it IP: Logged |

That didn't take long the MB is only ATA66. This shouldn't stop you from getting an ATA100 HD ready for a future upgrade to the MB, but it means you can consider a possibly cheaper HD if you like thats ATA66.IP: Logged |

How about IDE HD's? Do they go with ATA drives?IP: Logged |

er.. I thought we were talking about IDE drives lol ATA settings don't affect SCSI, Fibre Channle or FireWire drives, all ATA drives are IDE drives, as an example I bought an 8.4gb drive last year, just an IDE one, turn out that with the new motherboard it's actuly an ATA66 drive, so I thought that was cool So, IDE drives are almost always ATA drives, from ATA33 on older drives, to ATA 100 on newer, so this shouldn't be something to worry about ~Nat~ IP: Logged |
