At least now it does, I spent $160 to get the 10baseTx DSL modem and now everything works, including my DSL firewall router

I can ftp now! I can ftp now! Wooohooo!! I just had to get that out of my system.

I don't know where you are in the world but I know for certain that the speed of DSL is not the same in both directions. This is in the basic design of the standard. My phone company is providing the service as 1Mbits downstream and 256Kbits upstream ( I think those are the proposed nominal values, they tend to keep the answers fuzzy in this area). This was done to maximize browsing on the net. And these number can go down if you are at the limit distance from the CO or suffer from a bad phone line both outside and inside your house.

I worked for the phone company for 10 years and this a summary of how it was explained to me.

I suspect they like this arangement, it cuts down on home servers. I know that the cable company are applying a limiting process(artificial) to achieve the same result.

This does not keep me from loving the fast reliable DSL service I am using now.

I use this software to keep them in step

Now try to find some time for sleep...

Cool, I've used their free proxy (no ftp, sadly) but didn't check their other stuff out.

Yep Its faster coming down then going up.

Its not even only because they don't want people to run servers. Its because most of the time you are downloading. There is only so much bandwidth so they dedicated most of that bandwidth to the download portion because people want it as fast as they can get it.

1 Mbit should be about 130KB a sec, Thats what I'm getting. And that actually happens to be the theorietical speed limit on a 1 Mbit service.

Rumors are that its supposed to be ramped up to 2 Mits.

The model tops out at 8 Mbits, boy would that ever be freaking sweet stuff, but they just don't have the infrustructer to handle that kinda bandwidth.

I'm on Bell sympatico in Ontario, Canada, and parts of their network is already too busy.
