I have a one gig CPU, 384 megs/ram (PC100),
Gforce 32meg v-card.

Question, Would upgrading to the new Gforce- 3, 64 meg card make a large difference? I have found it for $349.

Yes it will- the G-force 3 is way ahead of the 2. You may not notice much if you run at the same resolutions, but throw the resolutions in the high end (1600 X 1200), and you'll see a difference.

OK, but in SDOE who can read the small text when the resolution is that high? I can run SDOE just fine in 1600X1200 with my GeForce2GTS but the lettering doesn't adjust in size. I posted this as a patch request some time ago.

Twice the VRAM will make it easier to see stuff.

VRAM? Video RAM? RAM on the video card? A 64mb GeForce will display larger text at 1600X1200? How so?

Nope more vram won't help that at all.

Personally I think as long as the games you are playing right now are fast enough then save your money.

Give us the full specs on your system gunner, if your really wanting to spend some money on your system we can help you out

Keep in mind the monitor size when thinking about the font sizes in hi res.

Oh yeah and if we are talking about SDOE, why bother? Isn't your system more then fast enough to run SDOE?

I'm really hoping your not thinking of upgrading the card just for SDOE.

No, It's not for SDOE, It's for Il2 and Silent Hunter 2 (If it ever comes out) , and just more speed in general.

I mean with a pc100 bus speed there isn't much more I can think of to make this machine run faster.

There is nothing running in the background and I still get the "slide show" from time to time in IL2 during explosions and such.

I realize I have a faster machine than many but I want to get all out of it I can as cheap as I can. And I was thinking a new card would help.

Getting slide show eh? Wacky.

Are you running everything maxed in IL-2?

I sure hope so cause if your not and your getting frame rate problems thats going to suck for us WITHOUT machines like that.

K I would say maybe get the new card.

OR maybe do a new system.

Buy a new MoBo, the sis 735 board is out for $65 US, and paired with DDR 266 ram its kicking ass. Get 2 sticks of DDR 266x256megs ram for 38 bucks a stick from crucial.

Then drop in a 1.4 gig Thunderbird.

Bang that should help out the bottem end.

That would add up to:

Mobo 65
Ram 76
1.4 106
---------
247 + taxes and shipping.

Thats pricewatch prices though, so figure a little more.

The vid card might help a little more, but pretty soon you will be out running your ram.

Now if you could so both

Oh yeah you could also sell your old board, chip and ram. I find people pay WAY too much for that stuff on ebay.

What exactly is your vid card? Like exactly.

Cause I might be in the market for a geforce 2 in october.

that's wierd...

I ran the demo with a quick mission with 4 twin engined trnasports to each squadron ( all 4 ) plus 4 squadrons of 109's with 4 planes.

When I got into the middle of the whole lot and surrounded by gunfire, I got some stutter. This was on 1024 x 768 32bit ( I think ... this was the highest res option anyway )

I am running a Duron 700, 224 meg Ram, and a Geforce 2MX 32meg card.

I was deliberately loading the system, and it held up well. I should be able to have some pretty busy dogfights if I drop the res or detail a fraction.

Gunner, go here: http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/boards/bbs/Forum35/HTML/001235.html

Use those GeForce settings for IL-2 for your setup. You should see a great increase in performance!!
