Yesterday I got my monthly newsletter from Webmasters e zine. It was about spyware, specifically scumware. Scumware may be hidden in something you download. Scumware once downloaded turns any words it finds on a website such as "cola" into a link to say, coca cola. So even if you have not added a link on your website to coke, anywhere the word cola appears will be a link to there website. This is really sneaky and wrong. Well in that newsletter there was a link to a program called lavasoft Ad Ware. What lavasoft does is scan all of your files and folders, memory and disk drives for any known spyware. So I downloaded Ad Ware (very small file size under 1mb)and ran a check of my computer. To my surprise I had 132 spyware files on my PC!!!! So I checked them out to make sure it wasn't removing any important files and I removed them. What's really nice is you have the choice to back up files, in case your not sure you want to remove them. There is a very descriptive help section with Ad Ware. It explains everything. The worst spyware offender I had was comet cursor. I used comet cursor on my website to turn the mouse cursor into a little ninja. Well turns out comet cursor is spyware, THE WHOLE PROGRAM!!!. So I removed it from my hard drive and I removed comet cursor from my website immediatly. So please if you have visited my site and downloaded comet cursor, remove it using the lavasoft Ad ware. Here is the link http://www.lavasoftusa.com/index.html You will probably be surprised to see some spyware snuck in, I was. ------------------ -Blacksheep http://geocities.com/jays3299/toshindo.html IP: Logged |

Yep, used this for sometime, but be careful and make backups before you remove them, I spent a long time without running it, then I found loads, after removing them Exporer wouldn't work anymore, luckily I was able to restore the backup.. not that this satisfied me, I re-instaled windows and removed all the crap then Good info Blacksheep IP: Logged |

No problem tailgunner and Condor. And thanks for the tips Nat and Psi. I'm surprised this program didn't get more recognition before, it's an excellent tool and it's free. Hopefully Ad aware will get more publicity, it deserves it. ------------------ -Blacksheep http://geocities.com/jays3299/toshindo.html IP: Logged |

There's another one they have called Ad Search.you can type in the name of a file BEFORE you download & install it. If it's known spyware, it comes up in the list window along with the ad program it uses. IP: Logged |

60 here but most were cookies, only one (web3000) spy proggy was found. My 'registered' version of Gozilla, believe it or not, is NOT spyware! I remember using an earlier version of ad-aware last year when I was using the 'free' version of Gozilla & it DID show up as spyware. So, I guess the full version is spy-free.Also, I've started using a proggy called At-Guard. It monitors cookie activity while you surf & ask you permission as cookies come in... just some extra FYI... hip63 ------------------ ...remember always fly HIGH!!! http://groovygalaxy.50megs.com/psychedelicsquadron.html IP: Logged |

This is what I suspected, that when you have the free version you do have to put up with it. I too had many cookies on my system that were spyware, so I suppose a guy has to keep up on it P IP: Logged |
