After I got my PC upgraded, I have to wait until it's finished quitting Windows 98, then a message appears on the screen saying that 'you can shut the computer off now.' That sorta thing used to be normal five years ago, but it's a bit annoying now. How do I get the puter to shut itself down??IP: Logged |

You need an ATX power supply and board that supports it. Im guessing youre running an older AT mother board with a P8&P9 power connector...IP: Logged |

If you have a semi-new to brand new computer, you SHOULD have an ATX power supply. Theres one easy way to tell without opening it up:Look on the back of your computer, if you have your mouse port, keyboard port, printer port, serial ports, USB ports, sound card ports all on the same 2 rows, then you have an ATX power supply and compatable mother board. If you do, then yes you can open up the BIOS and look under the Power section for any options. If youve looked all through your BIOS and cant find anything, chances are youre running an AT or Baby-AT mother board with a P8&P9 power connector. IP: Logged |

I seem to have that. I'll pop into the BIOS and have a look again.IP: Logged |

try this, click START, click RUN, type in: MSCONFIG, click OK, click ADVANCED, see if there is a setting for there, also try right clicking on the desktop, click SCREENSAVER, go down to the energy saving feature & click SETTING & see if there are any shutdown setting hereas well...hip63 ------------------ ...remember always fly HIGH!!! http://groovygalaxy.50megs.com/psychedelicsquadron.html IP: Logged |

If you have an ATX power supply, then one other thing can cause this problem- something you have running under windows. Although this is usually the cause of the shutdown hanging before this screen appears, I have seen it happen at this point on occasion. Boot into safe mode, then select shutdown. If the computer shuts down all the way you'll have to go on a 'which hunt' i.e. 'which' program is causing this to happen?
