I thought it was the final requirement for the Navy and Marine specs... that's what it says in the press release anyhow.Very cool videos of it... any idea when the transition testing is supposed to happen? -Stark IP: Logged |

Today. STOVL is required, but I don't think ability to hover is required, just short takeoff's and landings.IP: Logged |

Wow! That's a fast turnaround for more flight tests - I would have thought they spend at least a week going over the telemtry and inspecting the lift system for signs of stress or damage. Hopefully they post some vidoe of transitional flight - that's the really trick part of VTOL flight. Hovering is childs play in comparison.-Stark IP: Logged |

STOVLShort TakeOff Vertical Landing It has got to hover to land vertically.
The US Marine Corps launches S/VTOL Harriers from the LHA-1 and LHD-1 class amphibious assault ships. Amphibious assault ships have no catapults for launching CTOL fixed-wing aircraft. AFAIK, these ships are the only platforms that create a mandate for the JSF's STOVL requirement (I'm not involved in these programs). The US Navy will put the non-STOVL JSF aircraft on the CVN class ships. Interestingly, the Royal Navy (UK) abandoned their traditional carriers. "The Royal Navy had lost its own large carriers--and its F-4s--as a consequence of defense cutacks in the late 1960s. The Royal Navy was permitted to build three cruisers with full-lenght flight decks. Nominally built to carry large antisubmarine helicopters, the new ships were actually desinged with V/STOL in mind. After some delays, and in an atmosphere of austerity, the U.K. MoD approved development of the Sea Harrier FRS.1 in 1975." See http://www.fas.org/ IP: Logged |

For info on the Boeing design. http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/2001/q2/news_release_010625n.htm Lockheed Martin is really confident, since the Paris AirShow they've come to believe they'll win the JSF contract. Given the recent performance of the company... Well anyway, maybe I should buy some LM stock... Aladar, does your dad work for LM Aeronautics? PS I have a record for favoring the loser, really liked NorthGrum's YF-23. It was too radical for the USAF.
