you think those are nice? Check these out! that pic is from comanche 4 from novalogic, and yes that is an in-game shot and not CGI. [This message has been edited by Razer (edited 06-24-2001).] IP: Logged |

The problem with those trees is that they negate the effect of the existing forest terrain... what you have is a forest with a few additional trees magicaly supperimposed on top of it.This is the way to do trees right, from Fly!: Forest areas are raised above the terrain, but flat like messas... you could sink into them if you try to land in them... one thing I hate most... the green desert! -where you can land anywhere. I like the way these trees form a 3d world near the ground... like the fields (and runways) are shallow canyons.. to me, this feels most real. ------------------ -Sv Wings with Wires IP: Logged |

Ummm... Sv, take a look REAL hard at that pic Razer posted. If that doesnt look like a real forest to you, then you should get your eyes checked. IP: Logged |

The novalogic forest looks pretty cool but at the same time it looks cartoony. The fly forests and tress just look bad overall. I think SV is talking about the trees in IL-2, And I think I get what he says.

No matter, to each their own. As for Comanche 4, after F22 Lightning II I will never buy a Novalogic game again, it was that bad. Simulation my ***, at least it made for killer arcade style LAN play.Werner ------------------ Abbeville Field: Dedicated to the SDOE Experience. IP: Logged |

(I am talking about IL-2) So a forest is flat with a couple of trees sticking up? The ground texture is supposed to look like the terrain has depth... and is uses shadows to do this (and works well)... but when you add real 3d trees above it, it gives the illusion away. The trees in my screen shot don't "look" so great, but they are more realistic... I guess it depends if you want immersion or eye-candy maybe. The trees in Razer's pic look awesome, but how are they rendered? What happens when you fly into them? Are they flat, or a combination of ground texture and real trees? It is hard to tell from a screen shot and not flying in the game... IP: Logged |

The stand-alone trees in IL-2 are in fields, so they should look like they are sticking up above the ground. The real forests in IL-2 do have depth, you can see some of this to the right of the second pic.The real forests look like they use the same technique as "Black and White", which is to stack layers of tree-cross-section textures, so that you have 5 or 6 stacks making up a "tree". I would think that at a low enough altitude it would look kind of funny, but it would give you real depth. It works pretty well in "Black and White". IP: Logged |

Sounds cool Lothar! Yea, this would be very nice for trees in fields... the ground texture just looked like forest to me... forests are such a challenge - I wish there was some clever way of doing them with hardware... the sense of flight just over the trees is a wonderful thing.IP: Logged |
