Just give your opinon of the most beautiful plane you've ever seen, and a picture for those who don't know what one is. Mine would be a hard choice, between (don't laugh) The beautiful De Havilland DH88 (Shut up, and don't laugh) The elegant F-4 Phantom II And the beautiful Lockheed Martin JSF. What about you?

WWII: P-38 Cold War: F-8j Crusader 70s: F-15 Eagle Modern: F-22 or JSF X-35By the way, is the X-35 still being considered or have they decided to go with the X-32? I hope they go with the X-35. The X-32 is one the ugliest planes I've ever seen. [This message has been edited by JT (edited 06-22-2001).] IP: Logged |

Spitfire followed closely by a Mosquito. It's not so much the looks as it is the sound of a Merlin at full throttle. Sounds like what an aircraft should sound like. Jets have no grace. Just remember you asked.IP: Logged |

I used to think the P-51 was until I walked into the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum exhibit of the Zero. It is truly the most beautiful plane I have ever seen.IP: Logged |

JT, I hope to God not! They haven't made a dexcision yet, and I too agree that the X-32 is the ugliest thing in creation. My Dad works for lockheed and has it on very good authority that Boeing has already burnt out their hovering engine, and doesn't have enough power to hover (its not a requirement, but probably a plus).[This message has been edited by Aladar (edited 06-22-2001).] IP: Logged |

Is this for military aircraft only? Of civilian aircraft it must be the Lancair (any model.) Hard to beat this one: There's a blood red airborne ferrari with a prop at the club... want want want... Otherwise... the Yak-52 isn't too bad. Saw one practice low fly-by's the other day (exceptionally similar to the one in this picture.) Impressive machine. _ /Bjorn.

Smokey, I guess you're not all bad. The B-17 is my favorite plane and she is beautiful and makes my heart jump everytime I see one. But based solely on appearance I put her 3rd on my list. But I could move her to #1 easy for the price of a six-pack.IP: Logged |

Jerry; Dang, you are expensive!! Well, for me, has to be the Spitfire; specifically, the MkIX. Nothing, before or after, comes close to my idea of a 'beautiful airplane'. Though I do have a soft spot for the Sopwith Pup. Oooops...forgot pics. Oh, well, I guess everyone here has seen a Spit IX pic.

Prop planes, Spitfire Mk.V and Mosquito B.IV: They're the most beautiful machines ever to grace the sky. To see one of them is stirring, to hear them as well, well that's pure heaven. Then there's the dh-88 Comet and the Constellation. Pretty planes both of them. In the jet category, there's the English Electric Lightning and the F-4.IP: Logged |

But the Boeing JSF would be able to Vector In Forward Flight; the Lockheed JSF probably wouldn't (at combat speed).I haven't yet read the difinitive word about how (un)important VIFFing was to the British in the Fauklands. Seems a useful feature. Interestingly, in "Joint Strike Fighter, Boeing X-32 vs Lockheed Martin X-35", Bill Sweetman states the a key advantage of STOVL is in landing on Carriers in very low visibility. The British & US Marines can provide air support in weather that grounds the US Navy aircrews. Most Beautiful:
Jet: Single: AV-8B Plus, Twin: SR-71, Quad: B-58 Hustler Rocket: WWII:: ME-163 Komet Post War:: X-15 Turboprop: Twin: E2 Hawkeye, Quad: TU-95 Bear Piston: WWII:: Single: FW-190, Twin: He-219 Uhu Post War:: Single: F1F Bearcat, Twin: de Havilland Hornet(!) On a national basis, I think the UK has done the most to push the envelope of aircraft design. The US has been the leader in Space though (thanks to the good Dr. Von Braun). When I was a very young kid B-17s were still flying around. One would go over once in a while and would be low enough you could hear the engines. Man, that would put a lump in my throat every time. Aluminum Overcast comes to our area about once every 2 years. Whether I go an see her or she flies over my house I get the same feeling.IP: Logged |
