I'm reading Charles Whitings account of this battle: amazing how little you hear about this terrible and pointless battle; I suppose victors always write history. Anyway, I came across this account of a lighter moment in the battle, I thought it funny:

"Two RAF bombers were shot down before midnight, and from one of them Pilot Officer Walter MacKay and Pilot Officer Albert Howe of the Royal Air Force parachuted into the unknown. They did not know whether they were dropping into enemy-held territory or their own. Fortunately for them they landed in the position held by the 110th, where they were challenged by Private Spike Malloy from Brooklyn. He demanded the password from the RAF officers. Obviously they didn't know it, and for a little while they were pushed around by the boy from Brooklyn until finally they persuaded him to call his superiors. He did so, telling the man at the other end of the line at the command post, "Dere are a coupla guys here speakin' broken English. We tink dere Germans." that was about the only funny thing to happen to the 110th that night."
