I went over to the Il'2 forum today and read a few posts. I was amazed that there are squads forming the I/JG3 and II/JG3 thats so cool. Anyway I said to myself I better go register my username so I look for a place to sign up: $15 to sign up to a feakin' forum?!?!?! Are they mad! I am about the only person who won't join and thats beacuse I don't have the money to spend on forums. I think what they did is totally unfair. What do you guys think? I wish I could join and I probably will get Il'2 but I can't pay money just to use a forum. Snake IP: Logged |

Normally, I am against such a thing...but I know the situation here, and the character of the person involved is above reproach in my book. He has his reasons for doing this, and they are sound, honest ones. If I were at all interested in IL2, I would pay to join the forum there; if Rowan's BoB had generated this kind of interest, and he had done the same with it as the focal point, I would already be a member. But I would not do it if it were someone I was not familiar with, or if it were sponsored and administered by a publisher/developer. I didn't pay for Combatsim for some of those reasons, even though I thought their forum was excellent. But while I am in no danger of being broke, I do have to watch where I spend. So, I do understand where Snake is coming from. Just my take on the situation. ------------------ nealg=FC=

I like the look of IL2, and can't wait for it's release, but I would never pay a penny to use a forum for any game regardless of how much I like the game itself, thats nothing against the game owners/creators, I just disagree with paying for for a forum thats related to a game I've just paid for (or will be paying for) I love it here that we get new users on a regular basis, but I doubt e'd have any if they had to pay to join.IP: Logged |

I know I read that Jetlag. I agree totally with Nat. I mean I'll be paying £40 for the game anyway that should be enough to entitle me to the forum. I can still post in the forum but I can't take part in competitions or download new stuff?Thats lousy. It seems unfair to me that such a great game did this. Anwya so far they have only 147 memebers whilst SDOE has 1147 memebers (approx) Snake Ps: I definitley will be buying this game anyway. PPS: Here is something freaky: When I went to the Il-2 forum today it had 147 memebers. When I wrote 1147 members in SDOE it was just a play on how many more we have than IL-2 and it was a guess. Curiosity got the better of me and I checked how many memebers we DO have. Guess how many? 1147. Now THAT's weird.

I'm a paid up member and I don't regret that decision for one second. If you want an IL2 forum, simHQ has one, BlueByte (the 'official' one) has one, and I'm sure other simming hubs have one (dogfighter, etc). The owner/operator of ilyushin2.net has a reason for the membership fee, and I believe he has struck a good balance between the atmosphere intended and openness to the public. As for contests, I see zero reason why it is wrong in any way to have to ante up first - the prizes offered aren't some cheap trinket, they're works of art. Those items don't come cheap, either supplies or labour involved, and I think it is a very reasonable compensation for the time and effort put in by said owner/operator, not just in the competitions but the whole site itself. Given the possibility of a perceived conflict of interest, I won't touch this thread, but I really think it belongs in OT since it has nothing to do with SDOE. If it's moved, that means Hawk thought so too. Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

Well... Truth be told, we are kind'a lucky in that Inertia hosts this forum. If not we'd be choking on an ezboard or like the IL-2 forum, be privately hosted. That said... paying for the site and the bandwidth on ones own accord is a tall order in deed! Ask Pete Hawk or Darren over at the BA-website... they'll be more than happy explaining how expensive and demanding hosting such a site is... Lastly as previously noted... The IL-2 general forum is free... There are specific areas for memebers denoted. Obviously there isn't much advantage to being a member right now... I suspect that'll change dramaticly once IL-2 is released... IP: Logged |

Agreed. 147 members for a game that has not yet been released is pretty good I would say. And like nealg, I know the owner as a reasonable, fair man with legitimate reasons for charging. While I am not yet a member, that will probably change when the game has been released and I am actively playing it-- but until then....I am too poor LOLIf this site became a pay site, there is a high probability that I would pay for it due to the enjoyment I get from the community....I would have to think a bit about it-- but hell-- I have three or four magazine subscriptions and I barely have any time to read them-- $15 is a good price for a subscription As far as the prizes go-- if he's giving away any of the models he does, they are well worth over $15
