You're probably thinking "Oh no, not another discussion like this". Anyway, here's my Winamp playlist, with my favourite skin for WA, called Shiva. As you see, it's quite a hodge-podge of different tunes, but what I listen to most is kinda older music. Like Leonard Cohen (heyyyy, a Canadian ) and Simon&Garfunkel. But my big hero is Roy Orbison!!!

LOL, Shirley Bassey! She can kick ass! Did you know she also recorded "Diamonds are Forever" and one other Bond song, I think it was "You Only Live Once" but I'll check when I get home.

Personally speaking, I've always disliked the vocal tracks and title themes on James Bond soundtracks, but the instrumental music from those films was always excellent.

If anyone is interested, I have official 007 sountrack albums and other 007 inspired albums pictured here... http://members.nbci.com/fginc/soundtrack/soundtrack.html

My favorite Bond related tune is the Perez Prado version of the 007 theme... it's on "Music to read James Bond By (vol. 2). Al Ciola's "From Russia With Love" guitar instrumental is also an inspiring track from that record.

Whoa! Those themes are awesome! I have the shirley bassey one on cd, but semmern, do you think you could zip 1 through 7 and 13 and send them to me please? That would be awesome! Emails on my site and on the forum summary in the moderator box.

I listen to all kinds of music, but if I just want to put on the radio and listen to some tunes, it's Beat106 (www.beat106.com) over the internet. Yeah, ok, convicted geek I know. It blows the minds of the secretaries at work though, listening to scottish radio while I work.

Speaking of music... Check this out you guys! I haven't listened to much of it yet but it certainly is a blast from the past! I think they're pretty historically accurate, which means propaganda clips too, but the classical music certainly is good.

Werner - I got all of them from Napster, even after that copyright shit started, so you might try getting them first, or maybe try Kazaa or WinMX. If that doesn't work, I can mail them to you.

Anyone here that likes Roy Orbison???

Hmmm... if you like the title themes, there are lots of inexpensive compilations out there. Here's one...
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000000L8L/o/qid=992103071/sr=2-2/ref=aps_sr_pm_1_2/102-8820275-4248134

By the way, just as an aside... has anyone noticed that films these days always have two soundtracks? There's the music that's actually used in the film (sometimes called the incidental music) and then there's the pop/rock soundtrack. The pop/rock soundtrack is a collection of songs that are supposed to have something to do with the style or plot of the movie, but are really just components in the hype/merchandising campaign. The songs sometimes make it into the film, but usually only briefly and often not at all... for instance, a song on the pop/rock soundtrack might be playing on a radio in the background of some scene in the movie... I guess this is sort of like when brand names advertise by having their product or logo appear in the background.

Anyway, I wonder what was the first film to adopt this dual soundtrack approach? When was this approach adopted... in the 80s?

I'm not necessarily against this, but the sad thing about this approach is that people end up ignoring the incidental music in films. Take for instance the recent Batman films... horrible movies, but they have really great symphonic scores. You'd never know it, though, because the film studios only hype the lame songs on the pop/rock soundtracks.

I think I prefer the way Bond films were scored... they would have one title track song and then the rest of the soundtrack would be the incidental music from the actual film. This is the way it ought to be. Of course, there are always exceptions.

It has to be Rock music.
Metallica, Dire Straits, and more Dire Straits.

Occasionally, i throw in a bit of Fatboy Slim and Apollo 440 for good measure

Me and Mad Dog want to write a screen play, and we want use all kinds of cool music we like, Its action so stuff like NIN and kyuss and stuff was going to be the music.

BUT we were going to put that music at the forefront. It wouldn't be cut, it wouldn't dim and the movie would be built around that.

In fact we knew our theme for the movie and we would listen to songs and build the scene from what the song told us. We had some kick ass Ideas, Now only if we would put it down on paper.

If anyones wondering it was a movie about Nam and bank robbing LOL, somehow we were going to tie those together. 2 parts.

I totally get what you are saying BTW JT, I love the music in Heat, Boy some of that stuff kicks, I have some of it, Moby. That music when the cop is tearing down the highway to catch up to the main dude (sorry i'm bad with actors names) is really great stuff.

Hey someone else here listens to The Great Escape and Kelly's Heroes! Damn those songs are cool. I also love The Hunt for Red October songs, especially Red Route One and the Russina National Anthem.

Now don't laugh but download "The Cartoon Network The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest"s Theme song. I know, I know thats a kids program but the theme song is REALLY cool for flying SDOE. Its like motivational like Eye of the Tiger. Make sure its the modern one with the drums if you are gonna download it.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw your post too . The Kellys Heroes theme is really cool. And when the Battle of Britain theme starts playing and I'm in SDOE flying a Spitfire on an evening mission in 1.5.2.9, I'm not very far from shedding a tear, and it sure sends a shiver down my back .

Yeah, some interesting choices on that soundtrack.

By the way, Heat, which was a great movie, was directed by the same guy who made Miami Vice... Michael Mann. Miami Vice looks hopelessly tacky now, but if you can get past that, it does have it's moments... it's interesting to watch the way music was used in that show... almost like in a music video... which makes sense since music videos were all the rage in the 80s.

Depends on the mood A little Duke Ellington or Glenn Miller when I am waxing nostalgic

But for the most part-- I must say I enjoy a little rock--- weird thing is that most of the bands I enjoy are Canadian LOL I started on Rush and the Tragically Hip....and have moved on to the Bare Naked Ladies-- guess I can relate to them being 30, a little overweight and a really bad dancer LOL They put on a hell of a show though-- reminds me a lot of my college band-- only we weren't that successful

Jaguar, what's wrong with 80's music?!?!

The latest music put out by all these bloody awfull girl/boy bands doesn't even come close to the greatness of half the stuff from the eighties!

Sure, Soggie Cookie are pretty good, same as lots of other 'new' stuff, but just 'cause some 80's stuff sucked big-time, you can't go past the likes of Dire Straits (who's lead singer/song writer/guitarist, Mark Knopfler puts just about EVERY guitarist EVER to shame!), Metallica and Pink Floyd?

Wait a second, your favorite bands are punk and hip hop influenced and yet you dis the 80s? That doesn't make sense. Here's why...

Yes, mainstream music sucked in the 80s, but there was a lot of great stuff happening in the underground. Most of those bands you mentioned would not be around or would not be well known if it weren't for the groundbreaking underground punk, electronic, new wave, and hip hop artists that toiled in obscurity during the 80s. In fact, most of what you heard and enjoyed in the 90s was born in the 80s and of the 80s.

U2 and all that Biggles said about Dire Straits. Kurt Cobain was a good shot and Elvis was a fat ass. I liked what ever I use to play on my Gibson SG through my Fender Super Twin, even though no one else did. Beethoven will always be one of my fav's and Robert Cray for sex. ZZ Top for the windows down @ 80 and Sara Mclachlan for looking at my wife. And the missing link in my life is Sniff and the Tears, Driver Seat. One of you Englanders care to help? I'm diverse but very picky, but my very very favorite tune of all time is hearing my daughters little voices hum the notes of all the songs I love...
