According to the article this feature is turned off by default. You have to turn it on to make it work. If you don't want it, don't turn it on. What's the big deal Spanky? IP: Logged |

Should have known that that would be YOUR thoughts. Its the fact that they have the balls to do this. THATS the problem. I suppose you see no problem with it at all do ya? What if it was ON by default? Would it be a problem then? Heck what if you couldn't turn it off? Naw no problem at all.

What IF it castrated you when you weren't looking? What IF you had to deposit a quarter everytime you turned on your computer? What IF Bill Gates is an alien trying to take over the world? The point is Spanky, it's NOT on by default and you CAN turn it off. There are thousands of features in Windows you can turn off and on. What's one more? Believe it or not some people may want the extra links. Who are you to say they shouldn't have that option? Again, what's the big deal. Where's the harm? I suppose you didn't see the parts where they were talking about those links pointing to microcrap sites? That doesn't bug you at all right? What I ment by all that was that microsoft could do ANYTHING and you would defend them, right? Simple question. Is bill your god or not? Yes or no. IP: Logged |

Why should something bug me when I'm not required to use it? There is a cigarette lighter in my car. I don't use it. Should I be pissed that it's there? Lighten up Spanky. There is no MS conspiracy to run your life. Worry about something that affects you.IP: Logged |

Argon, your astute and insightful comments have certainly added to the conversation. It's reassuring to know that the high schools in Texas are turning out such intellectuals. Your parents must be proud. IP: Logged |

While Im honored by you holding such a high regard for my intellectual abilities (You MUST be jealous) I however do not beleive Bill gates is an alien... Further more I dont really give a rats a$$ as to what you think my educational level of achievement is. To the paranoid, impatient person who started this thread, I leave you this bit of wisdom: "Two pebbles to not make a boulder" Spanky, I ask you this: If you were a Sears store manager, would you want to advertise what youre selling and producing, or what Builder Square is down the street? This is not an attack on anyone but you guys have no idea what is coming down the road in just a few years for the internet. With the soon release of .NET with C# and VB.NET, Java programmers are in big trouble. Is MS crap? Well to the common user maybe or to people who don't understand maybe so but to programmers NO WAY. I wish people would stop bashing MS, they are not the evil people dumb shits make them out to be. M$ ha$ make me lot$ of money and I thank them all the time. I did hear that Bill wanted to make Spanky his "Boy". Himdog out IP: Logged |

Bill Gates is not a god. He is a saint. For without him and his products, I wouldn't have a job. And neither would most of the rest of us in computer land. The gods are a Texas Instruments without whom there'd be no desktop computers at all. Or any other micro processors. Think of it. No pagers, no cell phones in cars...wait, THE BASTARDS!!!![This message has been edited by Sunray (edited 06-08-2001).] IP: Logged |

Yuk. I'm going to hang on to Win98 as long as I can. As for Smart Tags... "To turn off Smart Tags On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.... Click the Smart Tags tab. Clear the Show Smart Tag Actions buttons check box. Click OK. Note: Turning off any of the Smart Tag buttons will make that action unavailable across all the Office programs where it is an option." -Source: Microsoft (http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/2002/articles/oQuickSmartTags.aspx) Frankly I find those little pop ups (like the ones to complete a name or word or whatever) when you're typing more distracting (which slows me down) than having to use menus to get something done, so for me, with these tags its as simple as "switch them off". Now whats the deal about XP rewriting the code on sites?? Huh? Lets say I'm building a website for a small Exploration and Production company (Oil Ind.) and all they want is just a basic corporate front - contact information, board of directors information, investors information, annual reports, etc. Will IE-XP pick up on a stock symbol for instance and display an icon or whatever next to it that would direct the user to some MSN Investment site? I'm not too clear on that part. Argon - I sure hope that you somehow meant your references to impatient and paranoid in some form of jest or humour. I don't get your attempts at subtlety most times so I'm trying not to jump to conclusions but man do you leave yourself open to interpretation sometimes... Spanky isn't impatient or paranoid, he's a concerned citizen. We need more of those. Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

Well boys, Bill isn't going to be happy until you have to pay by the hour for metered access to an OS. If you think more intergration is a good thing then theres something wrong. Why wouldn't you have a job Sun? Are you saying if there wasn't windows there wouldn 't be any other OSs? Are you STUPID? Yes WM, the problem with the tags ISN'T that you can or can't turn them on or off. Its that it changes the web pages you build. It AUTOMATICALY reformats in a way that adds links to microsoft websites and partners. Thats pretty much hijacking your webpage. Does anyone think that, that is a good thing? ANYONE? No more microcrap fan boys, just answer the question. IP: Logged |

No, adding content to your web page is not a good thing, but this MS initiative doesn't really bother me. Here's why:The web is already divided into 2 kinds of sites: sites run by amateurs or companies for the love of the subject, and sites run by companies which are usually buried in marketing jargon, ommisions and mistruths. People who are allergic to marketing sites (like me) know how to avoid them. When I have a problem with a Microsoft product, I go to Usenet first. Microsoft's product support is usually incomplete and misleading and will never give you the true story. So now Microsoft is giving people the ability to turn their favorite sites into another site full of useless marketing crap. Probably it will do things like offer to sell you "Little Rascals" movies from MSN if I click on Spanky's name , or offer an upgrade to Windows Media Player 9 if I click on an MPEG. No one who cares about their web time will turn this option on. People who don't care about the flood of shitty marketing all over the web (the people who read thier junkmail and the inserts in credit card statements) will love this new feature. Commercial companies like Yahoo and Amazon are going to really hate this. The harm that I see in this is that it will drive traffic away from some commercial sites (Amazon for instance) to Microsoft's commercial sites. It won't drive my traffic, but it will drive some. This will add to the inequity in Microsoft vs. Everyone Else, which ultimately will be a bad thing for all of us. IP: Logged |

I'm betting that this shows up in a lawsuit very quickly after it hits the market. The content of many web pages is copyright protected and altering the way it is displayed to a customer or visitor without the express permisiion of the original author is illegal. Somebody will sue and they'll do it soon. Not to mention the potential lawsuits from online vendors who's pages are suddenly updated to include links to the products they sell available on a microshaft partners site. I would be mad as hell about that - not only alter my pages content but provide direct links to my competition from my own page?!?! I don't think so. -Stark IP: Logged |

Yep for sure Dan, I'm still running win98 and don't really see any need to upgrade to anything newer. My big problem with the software isn't how it will effect me as a surfer but how it will effect the web and the people who choose to turn it on cause they don't realize exactly what it is or means. The implications are staggering, As Stark pointed out. I personally think its about time I learned some linux, I think its time we all did. Maybe a dual boot with win98 just for running games. I've just started using Linux at work and it seems great so far. As long as you have someone around to hold your hand and help you with any questions, its not to hard to learn. You can install win98 and then Linux and configure LILO with ease. IP: Logged |

Well, it's like this see, without St. Bill's work, guys like you would never, well not as often, have your machine go down. When that happens, I get to do something other than wait for bad things to happen. Fortunately, most of the world's, ok the country's, business is using MS stuff and they have no idea how to fix it. Hence, I have a job. As to there not being other os's, that's not the point. If IBM hadn't decided to use St. Bill's stolen DOS, there'd be no computer industry as we know it. I'm sure you know that there are lots of companies that won't use anything other than big brand name machines. No matter the cost. Therefore, I have a job and so does every other computer type. And I can spend it on slick games like this one. So there.IP: Logged |
