This is a continuation of the racing sim discussion from the MSTS thread, I just wanted something that loaded faster and was topical. Anyways, I was reading simactu.com today and I noticed a demo video for a really, really cool Rally Car (Or maybe stock car, I don't know) sim called e-Racer. Has anyone heard of this sim?? Is it french only? The demo video was sweet!

If you go to www.simactu.com and look at the car on the right side under "Video" you can see the video. It uses a really neat plugin sniffer too, so you don't have to pick your bandwidth and format.

Oooh thanks guys, I saw that at eB last night when I was out with TS and Jag. hehe, I asked the clerk when MSTS would come out and he just looked at me and then checked his monitor, saying nothing. I said "are you one of those people who can't believe why anyone would want to buy a Train Simulator" to which he replied "I'm one of those people who can't believe there are so many people who want to buy a Train Simulator, we've been getting tons of requests for the last few weeks now". I then noticed that IL2 will be available on shelves for 69.99 Cdn on October 2nd. Guffaw!

There were a bunch of F1 sims there, including a really cool one with a screenshot of the racing in Monaco.

LOL, I guess its going to be a pretty popular game.

I'm telling ya WM, if you see a copy of grand prix legends pick it up, It rocks. And it will run great on your machine. The physics are the best part, damage kicks ass, blowing engines from overrevs or just slightly damage it and it starts smoking and stuttering. loose wheels, amazing crashes.

Read the first pages of the strategy guide (included with the game BTW)

"Whats so special about 1967?

Romantics will tell you that 1967 was the last year before advertisments were allowed to sully the flanks of Grand Prix cars, That is the last year before Grand Prix racing "Went commercial"

The realists will roll their eyes and tell you that the true significance of 1967 was that it was the last year before "wings," "spoilers," "foils," "fences," "air dams," and other aerodynamic accoutrements were added to the cars, and thus, the last year that the driver was doing more to hold the car on the road then the wind distrubed by its passage.

The introduction of "aero" forever changed the way the car felt to the driver, and Papyrus wanted to explore the time when raw driving talent trumped mere technical embellishments.

The problem is that grand prix legends is so realistic that these by now "vintage" racing cars really do feel the way Grand Prix cars did thirty years ago... before aero... which is to say, decidedly skitttish. In those days, nobody stepped into a 400 horsepower, 1200 LB car on rock hard, bias-ply, treaded tires and went fast right out of the box... And neither will you. With out aero as a driving "AID" you'll be struggling just to get the power down, even at speeds approching 200MPH.

Without aero the car won't be held in the turns by more "downforce" then the total mass of the car.

Without aero you can't:

Smear on the brakes with impunity.
Just make the cars handle just by dialing in more wing.

These unadorned crates demand respect, and if they don't get it they will bite you."

Theres 2 books with the game, the game manual and the DRIVING manual.

The game manual is game install and set up and stuff, and its 50 pages aprox.

The driving manual is called 4 wheel drift and is written by Steve Smith.

"Editor of Car and Driver in the 60s, Motor Trend in the 70s, and PC computing in the 80s."

The driving manual is TWICE as long as the game manual and it teaches you not only how to drive a grand prix car but how to race one.

This game has everything, the tuning section is huge HUGE.

And yes WM there is a mod community out there making tracks and cars, although I'm not sure if there is as many as there once was.

Really what other driving sim is there?

Be warned its VERY Hard, and you will want a wheel.

And remember to take the first lap or 2 easy, Let those tires heat up a bit, if not you go off the track at the first turn.

Yes your tires have to heat up to get max traction. Oh yeah, the heat also effects the PSI in your tires as it heats up also. Then you have to start tuning your PSI so it peaks as the temperature peaks. And if you want more or less grip you can adjust it.

You did say you wanted a sim right?

Good news, WM, Theres still a demo avalible. 18 megs.

http://www.papy.com/downloads/gpldemo.exe

When you fire it up, bump up the res and set the video device to 3dfx.

Otherwise it looks like crap.

Take a look from the outside of your car F10 and watch the suspension work.

Put the damage on realistic to see it come apart when you hit the fences.

and you WILL hit the fences.

The widescreen view is just how it is, I like it that way actually.

Be light on the gas, on the brakes and on the shifting.

And from inside the car (the only way to race really) watch your tires lock up.

I used me stick just to play around a bit, I set my gas and brake to forward back, the steering to side to side.

Clutch to trigger (yes there is a clutch and there is way to add an anolog clutch to your steering wheel on the net)

Look left and right to the hat and shiting and other stuff to other buttons.

Have fun.

Grand Prix Legends is excellent!

and available on budget! A few quick patches to get coopers and hondas back in ( omitted due to copyright problems) and then start learning to race! It aint easy, but it is realistic!

he he he see the shocks lift at the front when you as it, and compress when you brake...lots of rubber on the tarmac too!

much better than the average F1 sim!

I have most of the patch stuff on HD. I can try and mail it to you, but hotmail may get huffy about file size, so I will try to split it up.

I use GPL season to patch it, plus the KOTR patch which amends a whole load of stuff. I have seperate patches for the cooper and Honda, plus other patches that fix the model side. I also have Dubai and Brands Hatch track addons too.

Hehe. I have Goodwood, Snetterton, Le Mans Bugatti and Brands Hatch tracks, the Honda/Cooper patch and some GPLEA updated cars, like the Ferrari and the Lotus. And if only I could get a 32 or more MB 3d card, I'm gonna get some 3d wheels as well, cause they freakin rock, but they're hard on texture memory.

Whirl you talking GT as in PS2, Gran turismo?

We can't wait to link that sucker up, I think its supposed to support up to 6, Man that would rock.

I know we will try 2 but I'm not sure if we will ever try 6 LOL.

I might have to pick up my own PS2 (i'm currently using a friends but he will take it back when GT3 comes in)

Yeah sports car GT was a very cool game, much better then I first thought it was going to be.

Dan, I'm not sure where to get it, I guess you could look at some online shops, or maybe ebay.

And I think there is a D3D patch for it.

Werner,

Monaco is a track that is originally included in GPL. I can also recommend the game, it's the second best sim after Nascar 4 (and that's only because it improves on the GPL engine). If you don't like Nascar, GPL is probably the sim you should be getting.

You should take into account that a steering wheel is almost a necessity for the current crop of realistic sims, though, at least if you plan to do longer races.

I had a blast with Gran Turismo on the original PS and have been tempted to get a PS2, but I was hoping something with cars like this would come along for the PC. Fast has been trying to get me to buy Nascar4 and Sprintcar, but those cars and tracks don't get me cranked.
PCGamer says, "The vehicle physics are so mind boglingly precise that the adhesion of each tire will be influenced by over 100 paramters depending on ambient load, pressure, ans temperature."
"...everything from the rotational mass of the flywheel to the stopping power of the steel brake rotors will be calculated and factored in before the car so much as turns a wheel."
It all sounds astonishing, but to put in lay-cas terms...it sure is pretty and make car go fast now!

I don't really know when it will actually be released (although late 2001 still seems to be the target date; I haven't really asked the guys, considering how busy they are), but it should be a wonderful experience!

Mobil 1 Rally Championship is a great Rally racing sim. IMO it is the best Rally sim. There are some tracks that are over 26 miles long! You race in snow, mud, rain, and sun. Go to pcgamer.com and look up the review on it, also here: http://www.avault.com/reviews/review_temp.asp?game=rallyc .
I saw NASCAR Legends for 10.00 this past weekend http://www.theuspits.com/iwcccars/home.html . That is also a good one but those superbirds don't handle to good but you can get over 210mph at the Alabama Speedway. They don't make them like they used to. If you do see GPL get it, I found it for 15.00.

I was playing around with the GPL demo last night, and managed to complete the trainer course (the US one, I forget the name) in 1:30 on full damage and "Grand Prix" settings. I did that once (all in one car), versus about 100 crashes, wipe outs, lost tires, doughnuts at 200mph (that was fun) in other attempts... After I lost my edge I just started to have fun busting up the cars. I d/led the Colin McRae demo last night, so when I get home I'll take it for a spin.

I can't say really I know the West guys, we just exchgaged a few e-mails and chatted a bit on ICQ, that's all. But that's my differential code that'll be in WSC !

Werner,

welcome to the club . I still remember my first experience in GPL to be exactly like that. Those things drift, and more than with a steering wheel, in a corner your primary means of control is the throttle that helps you ballance the car. Training may take a while, but once you get in the groove, it's a true revelation and one of the best experiences available on the PC.

Don't forget about NASCAR Legends too, it's on sale for 10.00 at Best Buy and should run fine on your pc. Going head to head with the King (Richard Petty) is something else.

It's sad when my work-issue computer is a better gaming platform than my home computer... Oh well. Colin McRae kicks ***! I don't know if it'll be a big hit with the hard core racing crowd but its certainly all I'm looking for in a racing game. Sucks that it doesn't support Voodoo Banshee, but I hope it'll run on a GeForce. Anyways thanks for the tip Himdog, there is an Office Depot near work so I'll check it out at lunch, and I think we have Office Max here... Casualty,

I couldn't in all honesty call myself a genius, but if you want to, I won't be stopping you . About SDOE FMs; I'm a physicist, not an engineer .

Werner,

I know that CMR 2.0 only works with older version of the drivers for Voodoo 3 (1.05). Since the Banshee isn't all that different, perhaps tryig older drivers would work. Still, it looks best with a card that supports large textures, as the cars truly are gorgeous. As you said, it's not a fully hardcore sim, especially the tracks are tweaked on the fun side, so that lots of sliding is necessary to be fast, but the driving model is rather good, and it simply is great fun! Here's a screenie:

A couple questions for you if you don't mind Gecko... With the demo the documentation was pretty weak. I figured out directions and braking and stuff, but can you change the viewpoint? I don't think I could handle a 'cockpit' view because of the speeds and need to look L/R quickly, but still...

Another thing, after I beat the previous best time in a round I get some password number, what's it good for? Anything?

I love the powersliding... Man the best was when I did a powerslide around a "square" corner, put it into a fast roll, bashing up the car, then having it land back on its wheels. *Miao!*

Werner,

I gather you managed to solve your graphics problems, right?

In the control setup menu, you will find a control called 'camera', and you may assign a button for it. It wil cycle between a few preselected views, such as cockpit, bonnet (probably the most useful), and behind the car. You don't actually need to look left and right much, even though the best view of the road would sometimes be through one of the side windows .

I have no clue about the code you got... perhaps the demo also has a cheats option in the menu, maybe you can enter it there.

That roll you did... let me guess, it was at the end of that long straight in that Austrailian stage, right ? Been there myself...

Also, if anyone is interested, I've been workign on a simple car simulator myself, and if anyone is interested I'll post a link to it (I still need to update the version). Mind you, it looks very bare, but the physics is quite good .

Himdog,

I tried the demo, and it truly does look gorgeous, with the most realistic tracks of any Rally sim, but the physics model itself leaves a lot to be desired.

No Rally sim is perfect in all respects, but I found Colin McRae 2.0 to be the best suited for me.
