Hoax Alert! Sorry Psi- I don't mean to step on your toes.Go to http://antivirus.about.com/compute/antivirus/library/weekly/aa051601a.htm to verify that this text is there "...Originating in Brazil, a new hoax alleges the file SULFNBK.EXE is in fact a virus and urges users to search their system for the presence of the file. The hoax warns, even "Norton did not discover it". Perhaps this is because the file is not infected. " ... "Just what is SULFNBK.EXE? It's a utility shipped as part of the Windows 98 operating system that allows users to restore long file names."

That was my bad- not Psi's. I got three notices from different people and when I saw that it was on my hard drive-- I forwarded the warning to all I had e-mailed recently...it was an awfully weird looking file to be part of Windows though....but if you say so What do you expect-- I am a =FC=.....someone says the sky is falling- well I believe them ------------------ Brought to you by the campaign for a better Dauntless! Yes, this is a HOAX!I work in tech support, many of our customers were duped by this one. So we have to end up guiding them through restoring the file which they mistakenly deleted, believing it to be a virus! ALWAYS do your homework first and check the major anti-virus sites (Norton (Symantec), McAfee, etc.) for hoaxes and real virus threats first before you go posting all over the web and forwarding this to every poor dumb bastard in your address book. It's their job (not the poor, dumb bastards) to find and know about these things. IF a virus threat is real, these sites WILL have info on it, current and reliable - because as I said, that's their job. If not, it is likely a hoax, and they may have info on that too. You will find said file on EVERY machine running Win95/98, because as goth posted, it's a part of the operating system. (Oh my god, they're all infected!!!) Funny that it mentions it's a hoax within the message text. Bottom line - don't trust anything that's not official. What if I tell you to delete the command.com file, in the unlikely even that you find it lurking on your machine? Careful, you're infected! LOL This one is like the "Norwegian" virus - "We are not very technologically advanced here in Norway. Therefore, this is a manual virus, which spreads by word of mouth. Please format your hard drive, and tell your friends to do the same." ------------------ -=TheReaper=- [This message has been edited by ReaperMan (edited 06-01-2001).] IP: Logged |

Yeah well this dumb chicken went and deleted the *&^%$#@ file didn't he! Lucky I discovered after how to restore it again. Thanks Raider.. Fifteen minutes ago I got an email called Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. It contained two little nasties called sexy.virgin.scr and W95.Hybris.worm virus. Time to update my definitions me thinks. ------------------ IP: Logged |

You are?!!! Sorry Jeeves, we were just being considerate of our friends here. It would be worse to get in a car accident and discover that you had on that 12 year old pair of Haines that have a itch hole right where you don't need it now P IP: Logged |

...Well if the gloves came off much further between Reaper and PSI this would get a one-way ticket to flame wars, but in the public interest I think I'll leave it here for another 24 hours. I got emailed from two different people about this (virus) yesterday, so obviously the hoax isn't dead yet. Maybe when people realize that June 1st has come and gone without their computer growing fangs and eating them, it'll die a natural death. Jeeves - if you still want the thread deleted, just drop me a line. I have my email open all day. Cheers, Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

Look...I am very sorry I didn't spend a half hour researching this damn thing before I sent out warnings. To tell you the truth-- I don't really have the time to spend wading through the McAffee site to look for hoaxes-- I have missions, loadouts, and a ton of other stuff to fix. The e-mails I got were from trusted people, so I just assumed it was for real-- I have sent a few people here e-mails in the past few days, so I wanted to make sure they knew of it before something happened. It has been done before by others here-- and I was just trying to be considerate. Argon, Reaper-- I am soooo sorry I don't have my hard drive contents memorized-- I will try to be more proficient in the future. Sometimes though in the time it takes to do the research-- the enemy has already invaded the borders!! ------------------ Brought to you by the campaign for a better Dauntless! Jeeves - Well, get on it! You have thousands of cryptic MS system filenames to memorize! I wouldn't take any of it personally, I mean I'm happier to have gotten your email than not, having learned the truth I'm now warning my friends of the hoax, which wouldn't have happened otherwise. "[Hoax] happens". Such is life. Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

Hell you did nothing wrong Jeeves. I appreciate you having the consideration for me to let me know of a possible virus. I don't think Argon was being malicious and he obviously does know more about the tech side of things than I do. Don't take Reapers statements to heart, he's always been a sourpuss. Notice the only time he finds time to post at the forum is to make a person feel stupid. Hell I know I'm stupid but at least I'm not like him...P IP: Logged |

Jeeves, PSI, I for one appreciate your concern for others. You saw a problem and tried to help your friends. I consider that noble. There are thousands of people that were tricked by this message. (You are not alone here) And I am sure that you heard about it from a reliable source. I also first deleted the file to be safe and then checked Norton's website. If you hear that there is a bomb in the building what do you do first? Look for it or get everybody out. By letting everybody know about it also shares the resources and backgrounds they have. Some are techies and can verify or eliminate the rumor. So IMHO you guys done good and Thanks for looking out for your friends.

Funny you should mention that Raider Now can you help me get that file back like you did for Kar? LOL.....no seriously though! I really wasn't upset-- it has just been a kind of bad day here at school--- only one more week before the standardized tests start here- and I have 2 more topics to get through in chemistry! NP buddy. Jeeves, here is the link. I should have explained what the information said in my email.Look about half way down the page, it will explain how to restore the file. (easy) http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/sulfnbk.exe.warning.html Good luck with the end of school. My Mother-in-Law just retired from teaching Middle School after 26 years. They have 5 more days left, but her contract was up on 5-31-01 and she is out-a-there. I understand the stress. IP: Logged |

Technically, even if you did delete the file, you have done no catastrophic damage to Windows - many will never use the file. And Windows will toddle blithely along with it's normal Illegal Ops and system hangs, with or without it. And as Raider's post says, it is easy to restore. Fortunate it wasn't something else, I reckon.Of course, had it been, I am sure Microsoft would have been more than happy to come to everyone's house and make it right... As to the bomb/building scenario - well, third option - exit quickly and go 5 miles away and watch with binoculars just to see what happens. I think either of the first 2 options would be preferable to most of us.

Well, nice to see I'm so warmly received. I didn't think the tone of my message was so harsh- if so I apologize for that.My intentions are just as good as Jeeves' when he first sent this out, and Psi's when he posted here. Just wanted to give people a heads-up that this IS a hoax, before they go searching their HD for SULFNBK.EXE and forwarding a hundred copies of the "warning" to their friends. Granted, it's likely nobody will miss that particular file much, but it just wastes somebody's time and contributes to mass hysteria. And it happens to be a pet peeve of mine, so maybe that's why I came off as sounding a little torqued. I've been away from the board for quite a while- it took me a while to remember, but I think Psi is the only one on the board who is openly hostile towards me. In fact, I think at one point in time he named me his arch-enemy. Funny. I wonder if I should feel honored?... I'm not exactly sure what it is I did, but old grudges die hard I guess. Must have been something I said in Flame Wars maybe two years back. So on the subject of broomhandles up the ass, well Psi, with enough soap and a little determination, I think we can get it out of there. There are other people on this board who strongly disagree with me on some points, and vice-versa, but I like to think I get along with them pretty well, as long as we don't discuss religion or politics So maybe we should stick to planes... And NO I'm not posting here just to say anybody's stupid (certainly not Jeeves, not even Psi). Sorry Jeeves, Psi- this was not intended as a personal attack. Nowhere in that message did I say or imply anything against either of you, just that you should be more careful. Well there, I said it. ------------------ -=TheReaper=- [This message has been edited by ReaperMan (edited 06-02-2001).] IP: Logged |

Awful decent of you guys to provide so much entertainment for the rest of us. It's even more decent to send warnings, hoax or not. AND it's awful decent of you to send the url for the fix for a buddy of mine who sent me the warning, heheh, after he had deleted the file from his machine. I just know he's going to ask me how to fix it. Even though he's on this forum and I told him to look here and at the anti-viral sites. I win. He came on line about 2 minutes after I posted this the first time. In another he was ICQing me about what to do.[This message has been edited by Sunray (edited 06-04-2001).] IP: Logged |
