I had decided to try and not get anymore MS stuff after CFS2 but I am wavering with this one. Used to live next to a railway line and saw a few Steam trains use it including the Flying Scotsman (in steam but in tow). In fact I will get it IP: Logged |

Agreed Commando on the MS stuff, although some find CFS2 a very "feet wet" sim. But the reason I'm here is to ask (no, not about the Greyhound sim ) but what does it mean when a sim goes "Gold"??? Is this just the stupidest question you've ever heard or what *bait* P IP: Logged |

My understanding is that going gold means they're printing cds of the game now, which will be boxed and ship soon after. It could be more specific than that though. I have never felt too drawn by either CFS 1 or 2 (and I hear they're returning to the ETO with CFS3), just because of things like FM, DM, MP, etc. (hehe, what's left? ) but as a hard core train buff there's no way I could pass this one up. Another reason it appeals to me is that it'll have an open architecture, so hopefully one day we'll have trains going through the Alps and an Orient Express, both ones I'm eagerly looking for. Also, with train skins I can turn the BNSF trains into CPR ones. Werner Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

Hey Guys"Gold" is a term in the record industry for the sale of a certain amount of records. In the game industry it means that particular game is being sent for duplication. i.e print a bunch up. Usually the game ships directly after that. Congrats to the guys waiting for this train simulator. I'm sure you will get countless hours of enjoyment driving the train down the track and picking up passengers. Not to mention the horror of when a cow strays onto the track, or if a little tyke puts a pennie down to be smashed. Sounds riveting! On another note, sad news yesterday. The Greyhound bus sim has been delayed. The good news is that the developer Olaf Maddoz wants to add the ability to also drive an Ice Cream truck! I'm stoked about this one!!! PR=FC= p.s. the above was intended to have some fun, and not to make fun of any of you for being excited about a train simultor. Train simulator...heheheehe IP: Logged |

PR,I think anyone who enjoyed trainsets as a kid (I had several at various points during my early years) will love MSTS. I have a picture of my Nana (mom's mom) holding me and a large transparent plastic steam locomotive. I must have been about 2 in the picture. So my love for trains goes WAY back to my earliest days. I also had a good friend who had a great setup (a whole town on plywood) and I couldn't wait to go to their house after school and drive the trains around. So for me this is like a dream come true. Don't get me wrong, I'll always loves planes just as much, but after years of flight simming the train part of me will finally get to have some fun now too. Werner, no I haven't really heard yet. I do know that if my system doesn't seem like enough this program will probably cause me to upgrade. (IL-2 also, I'd love to be able to run both of these sims with max detail).

PeteI was poking fun at you guys, but since you mention that anyone who enjoyed trainsets as a kid will love this...I might disagree. I loved my trainsets as a kid, but I can't see this game, at least not for me. The things we enjoy as a kid don't 'always' translate over to adulthood. Part of the trainset that was enjoyable as a kid was the part where my imagination took over. Just like when I played in my sandbox with my trucks. What next, a sandbox sim? I really hope you guys enjoy this new game. I'll be anxious to hear about the stories from your missions?? PR=FC= IP: Logged |

Here's the homepage: http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsim Werner - min. system reqs is the good ole "266 with 32mb RAM-" thing. At E3, MSTS was shown on a PIII-800 with 128MB RAM and ran well at 1024x768. Full install is 1.5 gig, and it comes on two CD's. Here's the main menu: A bloke at Trainsim Online mentioned in his preview that he tried it on a PII-450 with 128mb RAM and a 16mb 3d card, and it ran quite well. Can't wait.... IP: Logged |

Great screens semmern! And thanks for the system info, I'm running Pii-400, 16 meg banshee, 192 Megs RAM. MSTS wouldn't have been enough to get me to upgrade, it'll take IL2 to do that. Now I don't have to wait to get my train fix. I could never get into a civilian flight sim, but my understanding is that the reason people do and enjoy it is that they get a taste of what its like to do that for a living, no matter where or when they actually work. For me its a similar thing, part of what captures my imagination with trains is the same with WWII - the whole atmosphere of an era, and how in some eras it can be so complex, sophisticated, and intoxicating! That's why I'm looking forward to the 1930s Orient Express in particular. Another thing is the expandability - making stuff for SDOE is so technically challenging I'll never have the time to learn how to do it well, but it if isn't as complex in SDOE, then I'll consider modelling the prarie - foothills - rocky mountain route that a lot of western grain follows. Living where I do, trains and the past are inextricably linked, and some of the vistas along the route are just incredible. Have any of you heard of Rogers Pass by chance? Man-oh-man that would look sweet in the game. In the meantime, I'll settle for CPR logos on the BNSF trains. Expandability is another - and I need only cite SDOE as an example of how expandability adds more to a game later on. It would be cool if you could do MP with several people on the same line and a guy conducting traffic, but I haven't read anything about that. This isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I think its rare that a niche of sims is - just look at racing and the people scratching their heads about a Nascar sim. I'm not big into racing, so the sim I'm looking for has good damage models and physics, lots of eye candy terrain and circuits that aren't your basic oval. Once I find a sim like that, I'll get myself a wheel and buy the sim. Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

...and actually there is a 'sandbox' element to MSTS you know - it won't be just 3rd party Abacus types making addons for this game, it will be user moddable too, and except for 3d modelling software, the tools will ship with the game, apparently. So just like SDOE, find yourself a good team and you're set. 3d modeller(s), artist type(s) and researcher(s). I'd volunteer for either of the last two, maybe even the first if I can get a decent 3d modelling program that works with the game. Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

PR, now will Olaf allow user made skins for the ice cream truck or do you have to use the default ones. Will that come with options like strawberry and chocolate or is this just a one flavor thing. Also can you keep me posted on the Greyhound sim and do you know if that comes with the drunk bum riding in the back with the puke on shirt option P (he started it) IP: Logged |

I never had a train set but my friend did . He had a wagon (trolley, bogey, whatever the word is) with an elastic-band powered helicopter on top. Flick a switch by the side of the track and the chopper would zoom off when the wagon pased over the switch. Great fun. Now that would be a great user add-on for MSTS Great screenshots. Is there any multiplay? IP: Logged |

I have about half a dozen N scale loco's, over a hundred cars, and lot's of stuff sitting in a box waiting for one of the kids to move out cuz that'll be the train room. This game looks so cool for train buffs. Semmern, do they have any of the older GN stuff (empire builder etc)? Also I think running a Northern pacifc Challenger (2-6-6-2) or a UP Big Boy (4-8-8-4) would be a blast. Anyone know if these are in the game? Semmern & Werner, this pictures are KILLER [This message has been edited by Da Jug head (edited 06-01-2001).] IP: Logged |

DJH, as far as I remember, there's no Challenger, but there may be this Empire thing. I don't remember. The Venice Simplon Orient-Express is there. You'll control the Flying Scotsman and Gölsdorf Series 380 steam locomotives; the Dash 9, GP38-2, and KIHA 31 diesels; the Odakyu 2000 and 7000 LSE series electric engines; and Amtrak's Acela Express and Acela HHP-8 electrics.[This message has been edited by semmern (edited 06-01-2001).] IP: Logged |

DJH - When I finish my railroad in the basement this summer I'll post pics. With the kind of talent in making stuff that we have around here, there's no reason we couldn't model any kind of locomotive you want. I live close to a place called "Heritage Park" that has a couple working steam locomotives and some old passenger cars too, I'm sure I could get lots of pictures. We also have a large CPR rail yard and I'm sure I could get in there for whatever we would need, I've been before. Also, if there is anyone here from the Cranbrook BC area, they've got (imho) the best rail museum in Western Canada, and with all the restoration work they're doing, I'm sure they could provide lots of technical details. I agree Hawk, but the beauty is that we can build whatever we want! I'm thinking stuff like the Challenger, big motha' of a loco. I'm thinking though that MS' decision was marketing savvy at work (hehe, big surprise coming from MS) - I mean in the release they hit three continents and three eras of locomotives, steam diesel and electric. I just realized too that the CPR's headquarters was moved to Calgary recently, I'm sure they'll have archives. Archives = blueprints, blueprints + free 3d modelling software (like 3d exploration) = mods. Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

I do admit that I, yes I have a certain passion for those Art deco period loco's. I got to see one go past my Grand fathers house in a little town in SE Idaho when I was a kid. He said "better take a good long look cause you'll never see that again" He was right. He worked most of his life as an oiler for the Union Pacific line. An oiler was a guy that use to ride the caboose and when the train stopped at the station they go out and walk the train and inspect the the undercarriage. Wheels in the old days had bearings that were hand oiled, his job. He had some great stories about chuging through the mountain passes of Idaho, Montana, Washington, Oregon, etc. But the sight of that old steamer going up the tracks at dusk pumping and heaving smoke and steam is one that I won't forget;)P IP: Logged |

They both have great tracks, great physics and pretty good graphics, plus your system will have no trouble running either of them. IP: Logged |
