Hey! I actually knew what a frisian was (and I actually have some shoes from your neck of the woods)! I guess those three years in Heerlen weren't a total waste after all! Welcome ARS - you'll like it here! -Stark IP: Logged |

I'm an army brat and my father was assigned to AFCENT in Brunssum... I do know a couple of Dutch words but I am not about to try and spell them!!!It's funny though... the thing I miss most about the Netherlands is the fries... there was a Friture(sp?) down the block from my house that made the best fries... mmmm... with some curry ketchup and a bit of mayonnaise and diced onions... oh man was that good. For all the north-americans, the mayonnaise is not what you think of as mayo - American mayo on fries would just be disgusting.. Anyhow, I think I still have enough Dutch to get by in a restaruant but that's about it. Funny thing is that while I lived in Europe I went to the Canadian section of the AFCENT International School and was enrolled in French Immersion...ergo, I was fluent in French but could only speak broken Dutch... I also had the misfortune of German classes whilst in French Immersion which means I was taught German in French... so I learned two new languages while living in NL but none of them were Dutch... it wasn't even offered at the school! Never attempt to learn your third language in your second language... it makes it very tough. To this day I have to translate German to French and then to English - lets just say you lose alot in the translation that way! -Stark IP: Logged |

Oh well, Canada's prime minister is barely comprehensible in either of our official languages so I wouldn't feel too bad. Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |
