Dont think me perverted or anything, here is the question..... I was watching WWD a few days ago and the though popped into my head... "How would a female Stegosaurus and a male Stegosaurus produce an egg? Wouldn't the male get jabbed with those spinal plates?" What do you think? Again, don't think me perverted, I just wonder.IP: Logged |

Just studying up for my Biol233 final right now... Actually there are lots of different ways to get genetic material A to mix with genetic material B (albeit not as fun as the one we're familiar with ). I suspect your dinosaurs procreated by one of the several methods of external fertilization, quite possibly using a spermatophore like some modern reptiles do.This'll sound wierd, but actually bug sex is really interesting. Some of the nasty things that go on in order to make sure your genes get passed on are incredible. For instance, one method of reducing competition (if you're a male), is to plug up other males' reproductive tracts. Another method involves a structural adaptation, where one male will literally scrape out the sperm from the guy before him, before depositing his own. Good thing insects' nervous systems aren't as highly developped as our own. Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

Maybe instead of walking up and putting it in. He is able to put it in and only walk up as far as he wants to. IP: Logged |

Aladar,To be honest, your guess is as good as anyones. Unfortunately there are no soft tissue remains of any species of dinosaur and accordingly we don't know how any of them actually reproduced...or for that matter even what color they were, what their skin was like, etc... The current paleontolgical guess (well, from my last class about 2 years ago) is that the female laid eggs and then the male fertilzed them (for all dinos, not just stegosaurs) much like fish do now. The reason for this guess is that with many dinos their mass was so extreme that traditional mating methods would quite probably have resulted in severe injury to both parties. I should be on Jeopardy... I have spent far too much time in school - can't pick a major and stick with it to completion... -Stark (renaissance man/geek extraordinaire) IP: Logged |

Ok, in all seriousness, if I knew how dinos mated I would probably be rich enough to be kicking into Bush's campaign coffers. However, sadly, I know nothing about it.IP: Logged |

Actually, we have several tissue and skin impressions left by Dinosaurs. Thats why Disney's Dinosaur is so remarkable in some of the realistic fields. They have Iguanadon and Carnotaurus impressions, and with these they were able to make increadably realistic textures. Color is another thing, , no skin pigments known to be preserved. I'm gonna get this book though, it seems interesting..... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0253334977/o/qid=987192911/sr=2-2/107-7131602-1960505 I found this picture on a website, this is the picture they describe in a review..... please, try to be mature and be serious..... Aladar, have you seen the BBC series 'Walking with Dinosaurs'? You can buy it on Video and DVD (American format im not sure) Its computer generated animation and to be honest, having seen the disney movie, I think the BBC have done a much better job. I think you should see it.IP: Logged |

I had the pleasure of attending a conference which included Nathan Myhrvold (head of research for Microsoft) talking about his "amatuer" paleontology, including some interesting conclusions he came to regarding the tails of sauropods and thier use in social/mating behaviors. I found a link to an article about it: http://abcnews.go.com/sections/science/DailyNews/dinotails980824.html He also drew some conclusions about the mating habits of T.Rex based on fossil evidence. For one thing, T.Rex skeletons come in two sizes, big and very big. It turns out that the smaller of the two sizes includes an extra bone which is used to anchor tendons to the penis in modern animals. This suggests that the male T. Rex was smaller than female. In modern animals, smaller males also correspond with mating for life. This hypothesis was backed up by additional evidence: A T.Rex skeleton was found with a severe fracture to the leg which had fully healed. A solitary carnivore would surely have starved if it suffered such a large injury to its leg, however an animal with a loyal mate could have been fed until the leg healed. Anyway, you can use the fossil record to determine (or at least have an educated guess) about such abstract things as behavior. It just requires a lot of detective work. IP: Logged |
