Hey guys, this is a wierd one...Is it true that in the US you have to pay for calls you RECIEVE on your cell phone. The Fiancee just got one for home use (she had one for work but doesn't pay for that), but she tells me that in the US you get charged for calls you recieve on your cell phone.. well if thats true I really don't wanna call her on it since I'm in the UK. But here we only pay for calls we make, shit would you pay for someone elses phone calls, I certainly wouldn't! If this is true though, does anyone know of a "normal" US pre-paid service, i.e ones that you only pay for calls you make and not cause someone else is calling you! ------------------ 7./JG3 "Naturlich" "SDOE... We recently got a cell phone, and we got a pre-paid service since we are only using it for emergencies, etc. We are charged any time the phone is in use, whether we are calling, or someone is calling us.I believe all cell phone charges are like that. From the cell phone provider's point of view, what difference would it make if you made or received the call? I would think you are probably more concerned with the long distance charges, though. I would think those would go on your bill and your Fiancee would be charged the same as if it were a local call (?). IP: Logged |

My wife and myself each have one (work pays for them) I'm in Canada, but I think it works the same here as in the States. Cell to land line, cell pays. Land line to cell, cell pays. Cell to cell, split the cost. Can't live without one. ------------------ silas Demon's Runway Fortes fortuna adiuvat Fear, that's the other guy's problem. IP: Logged |

thanks guys, that sucks big time, here in Europe you only pay for the calls you make, thats why it's fairly expensive to call a cell phone, because you get charged for it and not the person you're calling. Here recieving calls or SMS on your phone is free (the sender/caller pays for his call) but calls to your voice mail are charged.the UK used to be like the US when cellphones first came out, but no=one wanted a phone that yuou get charged for other peoples calls, so they changed the system and now almost everyone here has a cell phone. Or breakdown as per Silas's plan: Cell to line : Cell pays Anything to cell, the person making the call/sms pays. calls to hear voice mail, cell pays to recieve the voice mail, but the person that left the message is charged as if he'd placed a call to a cell phone. Thanks for the info though guys, the system you guys get charged by sucks, but nothing we can do about it Lothar, I'll have to check what she would get charged for me calling from the UK, hopefully you're right and it's a local call charge to her. ~Nat~ IP: Logged |

I forgot to say that the rates are not to bad due to free air time packages, like for calls made after 6pm or you could have say 500 free minutes a month. I have to sign off on my cell bill at work and I make a lot of calls, both during business hours and off work. The bill is about $24 a month. ------------------ silas Demon's Runway Fortes fortuna adiuvat Fear, that's the other guy's problem. IP: Logged |

Yeah but Nat, alot of the UK boys get charged by the phone companies over there for being on-line! (Aswell as the internet service providers) Here we only pay the on-line service providers and long distance fees. (Most of the time there arent any long distance fees unless you live in the back woods) IP: Logged |

but Argon... the sms messages sent in the UK alone were reportedly worth £2.5bn.. thats one of the big reasons the charges were stopped, hell most 14 year old kids have their own phones here, the industry realised here that stoping charging the owner of a phone for calls other people make would open up the market, and boy did it ever.Still though Argon, in your example, the person placing the call is the only one that gets charged, be a fine thing if you got charged for dialing up your ISP, and at the same time your ISP got charged aswell! Most teenagers here have cell phones aswell! I'll stick with the American way of charging people who use the tele line... (A set price phone bill per month and long distance bill if you call long distance) But youre right, I hate the way cell phone charges are done here in the US. But the cell phone charges here are relatively cheap atleast. IP: Logged |

I'd ban the damn things altogether. Or at least make using one while driving a Criminal Offence.(that'd be an indictable offence to our neighbours to the south) I don't know how many times I've either been nearly hit by some rectal orifice using a phone while driving. And while they're at it they can ban automatic transmissions, raise the driving age to about 40 and....sorry, got carried away there.IP: Logged |
