my grandpa (who sadly died 8 years ago) flew on several planes in his service during WWII...B-17C, B-29 (dunno what model), and B-24D

i recently found a cassette tape where he recalls his most tramatic event of the war....being the only returning B-24 in his mission...

on a mission to raid Truk his flight of 23 B-24's was intercepted by about 2 dozen zeros...the battle ensued...the bombers eventuall started to try to "high-tail outta there"...at the end only 2 B-24's survied as the japanese had broken off either cause of low fuel or was outta ammo...unfortunately the other bomber was only flying on 2 engines
and then 1 so it didnt make it back to base...making my grandpa the copilot of the only surviving plane out of 23.
