Good Grief!!What class of carrier is that? Smaller than a Nimitz methinks... but I'm no naval expert. Is your dad serving out there somewhere on the high seas? I thought he was a retired F4 pilot? WM ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

"Hey, captain! Stop turning that sundeck away from the sun! I'm trying to get a tan here!" Werner, that actually is the Nimitz herself. IP: Logged |

Lol semmern!! Werner my dad is retired, his buddies just send these photos around, he gets one he forwards it to me. I have no idea where they get them, occasionally he sends me videos which are available on my website here in the movies section (down at the bottom) http://flightsimhangar.homestead.com/main.html [This message has been edited by Aladar (edited 03-21-2001).] IP: Logged |

Yep, CVN-68, USS Nimitz, but I agree, she looks small in that pic, must be the angle.Tell you what though, lets be honest, who ever thought a ship so damned big could be thrown around like that! You can see how hard she's actually turning by the side wake, it's massive! Very little wake actually behind the ship. but damn thats gotta hurt of you didn't know it was comming lol IP: Logged |

That's an awesome pic! When a new ship is going through it's test trials to really put it through it's paces (see what it's capable of) maneuvers like that in the picture are common. Most likely that's what they were doing. IP: Logged |

I have been doing tests like this for one year... On RC models in a basin. I didn't know it, but turn rate or turn radius are about as important to a warship as they are to a a plane. An aircraft carrier must be able to turn to face wind quickly (preferably without making the planes fall overboard ), a destroyer must perform evasive manoeuvres...As there is no accurate way to predict manoeuvering capabilities with computer simulations, they rely on RC model testing. Those models are *big*. The PAN Charles de Gaulle was 9 metres long, weighted about 1 ton. The Taiwanese export variant of the Lafayette-class stealth frigate was impressive too (but it did not turn well). Anyway, this pic is absolutely impressive! IP: Logged |

Aharrgh, Billy! Boat people! The picture of the Cdn Destroyer firing the missile while in a high speed turn is kind of neat too. It might have just been in the CF as a recruiting poster, so ya'll may have never seen it. IP: Logged |
