Okay...here's my take on it.1st and foremost, the 1st film was made in the mind altered 70's, by a director who was likely stoned. 2nd, Most of Arthur C. Clarke’s stuff deals with man and his creator and "meetings". The point of the first film and the sequel. In the end of the first film, the contact is made between man (Dave) and his creator (God). In the process the "space baby" is revealed and begins to gestate. In the process of this revelation, Dave becomes both an old man and a child, as time become irrelevant since at the point of the Godhead there is both the beginning and the end. In the Sequel, the second crew flies out to Europa. They complete the contact and the cycle and the "space baby' is born. The space baby then is the new sun in our solar system (Jupiter, which comes close to being a star, but never had the density to ignite), and it's newly habitable planet, Europa, where life is already forming. As this life seed develops, the God-Head warns man to stay away and not disturb the new life form, which man has seen "born" on that day. At least that's what I came away with from both films.

Ok, so what do the large black stones have to do with God? And why towards the end was Dave trippin? And God lives on Jupiter?IP: Logged |

The film is about the evolution of man, from ape, to man, to AI.The end of the film completes the circle of life, bringing Dave's life back to the space fetus stage. The black monoliths were clues left by aliens. Once we reach milestones of humanity, by visiting various planets, we are given additional knowledge by the monoliths. Of course, thats just my interpretation. IP: Logged |

The only way to really understand the movie is to read the book.------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

2001 was a great movie! I liked the part where the alien hiding in the space ship ate the lady scientist then eat the rest of the crew, hmmmm maybe that was another movie. http://www.rcwarbirds.com/geebee.htm

It's what Goth said or that's what I came away with. The ape part was the best, I really like when the ape throws up the bone and it turns into a spaceship, wow! Man they were on something!!! Don't make them tripping movies like they used too.Did you hear about the monolith in Seattle, WA? It appeared for a few days in a city park, then it vanished. No one knows how it got there. ------------------ 7./JG3_Himdog out www.luftwaffe.net IP: Logged |

2001 was a great book and a good movie, but I still think that 'Rendezvous with Rama' would've made a better film.If you're a fan of Sci-Fi (or Arthur C. Clark) and haven't yet read this, do yourself the favor. IP: Logged |

Man that was a great movie, and book, I'm collecting all the books before rereading the series. The really great part of the movie was the silence in space and the realistic space stuff. No star wars and crap

My understanding about the monoliths was that they were "divine intervention" in the form of inspiration. It caused the apes to develop tools, and man to explore space. And yes, I think a lot of the moview was a drug induced or simulated trip. IP: Logged |

Not to worry. If you look closely, that baby is still a fetus in the womb. A studio liberal performed a late term abortion by sucking his brains out, so you never find out what would have happened to him. As long as they're still in the womb they don't mean anything. IP: Logged |
