I've just purchased a new PC and decided to install more memory myself since it was about $150 cheaper. My question is should I put the 256 M in the first bank and then the 128 M in the second? This way it will access only the first chip until it needs the second. Or should I just slap the 256 M in the open second bank? Thanks... weaselIP: Logged |

OK.....just did this not too long ago The lesser amount goes first, then add in the others after. There should be a line or two in the installation instructions as well-- either in installation or under troubleshooting. Thanks for the response Jeeves. I'm not sure what you mean by the line or two in the instructions. I just have the DIMM. Since it is a DIMM isn't it just plug and play? Thanks... weaselIP: Logged |

Weasel...Yes and no.... Yes, you can just plug it in and it should work.... but, the memory you bought maybe a different bus speed or access speed than your existing memory. What this means is that if you purchased a lower speed DIMM than your existing one you may see an overall performance decrease in the memory subsytem... though it probably won't be noticable unless your are a techno speed freak like me. Overall you WILL se a performance increase in your system... it's just the overall speed of the memory system that you may see a difference in (if you get out the proverbial magnifying glass that is). As for which bank to put the DIMM in - it usually doesn't matter. Some motherboards want the larger DIMM first, some the smaller one but the vast moajority don't care. The documantation with your PC would make this issue very clear if the order mattered in your PC. My personal preference has been to put the big one first but I have no empirical evidence that it results in better performance. -Stark IP: Logged |

Thanks Stark. They are both 133 speed chips on a 133 board. The PC is an HP Pavillion built to order. The manual had no preferance indicated. I'm very satidfied with HP. They have always been reliable machines for me. I have heard that they can be picky when it comes to memory and I decided to buy a brand name memory chip. I really think that SDOE will rock on my new PC. Specs: 933 Mhz PIII 30 G 7200 rpm HD Geforce 64 MB 384 MB ram (with upgrade mentioned above) surround sound speakers with subwoofer Thanks again... weaselIP: Logged |

Weasel,To make sure you get the most out of your GForce card make sure the AGP aperature in the BIOS is set to 64 and the mode to AGP4X. This will allow for the fastest transfer of data between the system bus and GForce card. It can mean as much as a 15% performance increase. Also, download the GeForce Tweak Utility when you get a chance (linked at http://www.planetgeforce.com/ under "The Goods") It's a real handy util that lets you tweak just about everyting on your GForce - one word of warning though, stay away from the "Beta" settings tab... these are settings that are not completely tested and supported by NVidia and can be very unpredictable. -Stark Oh, yeah... get the Detonator 3 v6.50 drivers from nvidia.com (just released) if you haven't already... they rock! Thanks again for the info! I have to set up a null modem serial connection from my old PC to my new one. Something I have never done before. I need to do this to transfer all of my wifes picture files over. It should be fun. Gee, I wonder if I can play head to head SDOE that way. Hmmmmm ..... weaselIP: Logged |

Stark; I am having a little trouble getting the 6.50 drivers installed. I have Win Me. I have downloaded the files from Nvidia and have it unpacked in a folder on my desktop. I follow the instructions in the unzipped file but when I try to select those files from the control pannel/display area, it does not recognize them as a driver. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks... weaselIP: Logged |
