Two years ago, my computer applications teacher was cleaning out a store room at my high school when he came across this very interesting book. The book is called "Arcology: The City in the Image of Man" published in 1969. He gave this book to me because it has some VERY detailed layouts of futeristic "optimised" and "idealized" cities that go hand in hand with mother nature and he knew I loved architecture. This book has some very amazing concepts about how man should settle the earth and live/grow with it. The author (Paolo Soleri) drew out and thought out very interesting "idealized" city layouts that work in layers (Much like the rainforests do) instead of spreading out all over the globe and creating little "pockets" of nature. Instead, he invisioned "pockets" of human settlement, and thus letting mother nature grow. These city layouts in the book are outstanding! They are very idealized, symetrical and pleasent to look at. I wish man would of settled the Earth this way....

I will scan some pics to show yall what Im talking about in a while...

Post them Argon. I'm curious if our society just follows a "set" rule of slowly develop the Earth until it cant take anymore, then BAM, total destruction and the whole thing starts again! Now that would be SAD!

Biggest problem with writings I've seen similar to that is they assume an agrarian society- which we no longer have.

Very good point Da Jug head,

This is what hurt communisim as well... but maybe someday, by fashion, we will be agrarian again- but I doubt it

I think man has built some amazing cities- and fixed some really messed up ones (like London) Of course no city is as messed as Boston is right now - yuck!

Diego Lozano,

I really don't think that will happen- even with modern man, nature has a way to deal with this. If there were major environmental upsets, I think it would just really thin out our population, I just don't see "total distruction". It would be real bummer times though...

But as far as a scientific view, it should be clear that there is nothing that man can not control on Earth, aside from the Sun and other major issues like commet strike, etc. Im theory, we could control the weather all over the planet, and foster what ever envornment there needs to be to keep Earth healthy.

We can NOT do anything of the sort now, or even the foreseeable future, but it IS clearly possible. The mind can turn the limitless energy around us into anything we are creative enough to think of. Look from where we have come! Imagine starting medicine from scratch with no knowledge- and trying to perform a kidney transplant! Imagine the scope of learning needed, and the amazing faith in science needed.... it is impossible for most to imagine because the take it for granted that we have these things... and that we earned them.

For some, they believe that we have the amazing power to destroy the entire environment of Earth- but at the same time the belive that we have no ability to stop such a thing... I think concearn is fair and wise, but tempered with objective thinking it stands to do the most good.

Sv-

Been in Boston and have driven through 47 of the 48 states and nearly every major city (NY, St. Louis, Chicago, Denver, Houston, LA, etc)

When it comes to driving , Bostonians are frigging NUTS! Worst place, hands down I've ever driven in.

Sv, there is one flaw with your argument that we can fix anything: ROBOTS! Yep, they'll be smarter than us, then 18 months later, they'll be twice as smart. Scary if they don't find us usefull anymore.
