I wasn't going to bring this up because I think this issue has long since come and gone, but I came across something a little odd the other day. In my travels on the internet I came across the Flanker 2 website (the imminent release of IL2 has me interested in soviet fighter aircraft again) and I noticed it was hosted by ballisticsites.com. Being a cool enough name I thought I'd check them out and see who they were, but if you go to the site it's nothing but a page with their name on it, black text, big font. Now I'm a curious sort of fella so I went to domainit.com and looked up who they were, expecting it to be some guy at SSI and that would be it (since Flanker 2 is an SSI product, and I'm something of an SSI fan). Well guess what, it's our good ol' friend Doug Helmer of Combatsim who runs the forums. Now I'm no expert on the subject, but if you're running the forums and websites for most if not all of SSI's games (I did a check on those too to see how far this went) you're going to be getting a sizable check in the mail each month. Like four digit sizable. Enough to cover his... four digit ISP bills. Now there are those who might say that not all four digits numbers are equal, and of course they'd be right, but 14 million page views isn't all massive bandwidth sucking each and every one - the killers were the european sites mirroring his page by downloading the entire thing each day (standard practice, it's a very safe bet to say that's what was going on). You can make arrangements to piggyback this sort of thing to cut down on your bandwidth, but it doesn't sound like he did that.

I'm no master sleuth here, but I smell a fish.

There's no big conspiracy here. We contracted with BallisticSites to provide us support for our product websites, to include Flanker2.com.

The did an outstanding job but unfortunately, our contract ran out with them and we were unable to renew the contract with them because we are moving the forums to our own server.

Doug and Gail are quality people and we have enjoyed doing business with them. As far as and perks or special treatment, we give exclusives to many sites regarding our products. Sometimes we give something to Combatsim.com first, other times it goes to SimHQ.com, or Dogfighter.com.

If any of you guys want to imply that something unsavory is taking place, go ahead, but you'd be wrong.
